Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoological Park 2023

Few questions - apologies if these seem stupid.

I will be visiting next friday. Will the desert house be open by then, and are the snow leopards off show whilst their enclosure is redeveloped?
Yes the new thriving through nature will be opened, as regards the snow leopards Marwell has only a female the new development will join with the old enclosure so yes the female is on show.I would not expect a lot of work until after the summer.

Regarding the potential location of the monkey/cavy enclosure - I don’t see why the cavies can’t be at LATT whatsoever - there are pigs and otters there too.
Though assuming that they will not remain at LATT, my main guess for the enclosure’s location would be at the ex-marabou site - though this is just a guess. Or to a lesser degree of confidence, the ex-monkey enclosure at Fur, Feathers and Scales / Encounter Village.

Does marwell have any plans to bring in some of the ape species ?. The grounds are massive and there is certainly enough space to build a couple of good enclosures and would also draw in more visitors

I hope so, it’s probably one of the biggest uk zoos that doesn’t have any apes

No there are no plans to bring in any ape species, work will soon finish on the former Bat Eared Fox area soon to be Bush Dogs which are coming in from another UK Zoo, as well another female Giraffe is due in at some time again from the UK. there are other plans for the future which I am sure Marwell will release at some time.

There were plans to add Gorillas some years ago, but if I remember correctly it was when the 2008 financial crash happened and then the plans were cancelled.

I agree, something like Gorillas or Orangutans would be great at Marwell. And would make me visit even more than I currently do as an annual pass holder :)

I recall that Marwell used to make a point that animals such as bears, elephants and great apes were not part of their collection planning.
Not sure if that's as much of a point now, but even so I'm not sure if there really is an area at Marwell that is of suitable structure ... The Macaque Island was cool whilst it had animals but escapes did still happen.

Only leaves Chester I think, didn't name them because Marwell's male was born there. Anyhow be great to see the announcement.
**Edit**
Also Rothschild females available at Belfast & Port Lympne

Wouldn't have to be in an existing area...would have to be a new enclosure. It's all hypothetical anyway and as mentioned above probably isnt likely to happen anytime soon. But I do think some of the bigger species would work well at Marwell.

Also some of larger apes are possibly going to be rehoused in Europe. Lopes the gorilla at Twycross for example. Another zoo housing great apes in the uk means they could be possible kept here

They had plans for gorillas about 15 years ago, before the African valley became a complete disaster. It won’t happen now.

Always thought spectacled or Sun bear would fit well in the collection, but the number of carnivores is declining anyway. They’ve increased the number of hoofstock after a major decline in species but not sure what their next plan will be.

Cretney mentions something about a 'long-term carnivore plan', so make of that as you may..!

I think the first point was something they used to say when John Knowles was running the zoo. Not sure bears were included in the statement and I do believe I have read that they had bears* at one point. That would have been before my time though. With the space Marwell have if they decided they really wanted a particular species it would just be a question of funding and building a suitable enclosure.

I recall that many people expected gorillas to be the next major development after the African Valley. When they started redeveloping one paddock shortly afterwards some thought it would be the gorilla enclosure. That redeveloped paddock is now the Fur Feathers and Scales walkthrough aviary, red panda enclosure and wallaby walkthrough.

* Checked Zootierlise after posting and sun bears are in the former species list for Marwell.
