what would you do if you owned this zoo

firstly i would relise all the parks Black rhinos onto the african experiance and build a full scale african savvana walk up at the empty space next to were you get off @ the top from the safari truks. lions, cheetah, african wild dog and new species will include spotted hyena and african leopard will be included. there will also be a african primate walk @ that end of the parkwith a new palace of the apes with a more natural out door yard @swell as an enclosure for Chimpanzees and (very unlikley) bonobos, the walk will also include all of the african monkeys
the parks bongos will be introduced to the african experiance aswell as a group of white rhino

will post a proper plan later

and i'm not sure about mixing black and white rhinos in the african experience, i know its big but i dont think its really that big.

walk through- on a different note i would like to know what species would be included in your african monkey walkthrough as i am currently unaware (but searching) for species that could fit in such a walk through

Out of interest, what would your plan be for separating all of the parks male rhinos when they start fighting ;)

i have thought about that and decied to build a rhino complex and the male rhinos rotate and when they are not in the fields they are in seperate grass paddoks

Good plan! It might also be a good idea to rotate the females aswell so that breeding can be more controlled.

Still quite a few females in close proximity would cause a few problems. Females seem to be fine when paired together young but I wouldn't think they would tolerate another female they did not know.

it would be nice to see some more antilope species of the african experiance such as sable (any other surgestions) aswell as cape/congo buffalo
i would also build a new african elephant house up that area of the park
will post some more later

Building on the African Safari Experience is fine and worth investigating with drawing up plans for more African antelope and other hoofstock (except the white rhinos).

Just your proposals for the "almost solitary" black rhinos (and the introduction of the more gregarious living white rhinos) is an ill-thought out plan from the start. Unrealistic and - I am afraid - a total non-starter. Besides, it would create massive social upheaval and stress in a highly sensitive species - black rhino that is - and preclude any future breedings. The entire policy and management regime at Port Lympne for black rhinos is designed to promote optimum breeding success and socially functioning cow-cow pairings and introduction of bulls on cow's oestrus sign. I would not want to have this endangered by an ill-thought - nice to see from a visitor perspective - African Savannah Experience. To have just the 2 related sub-adult bull black rhinos in there is as good as it could get ... ;)

i think i would have the bulls sent away, and then the rhino complex have no acsess to the african experience, and have white rhino on the experience, and for my walk-through i think i will have Be-Brazza, colobus, diana and mangabes
the deer park will have the banteng and water buffalo introduced to the deer park, aswell as gaur and indian rhino, it will then be renaimed asian plains. the wild horse will then have the extent of the current water buffalo enclosure, and will then be mixed with bactrian camel
the current bison exhibit will then house asian elephant(what are you views of having both species of elephant @ the park)
will post some more later

Hold on, did you mean sending the black rhino bulls away? Cos PL has one of the best black rhino breeding programmes in Europe!

Asian Plains, how original.

I gather this was what he mean't. Def not a very sensible move, you don't try and fix something that is not broken.

I like the idea of them acquiring Indian rhinos esp if they can bring the same succes they have had with the black rhinos to them.

what i ment is to send the two juviniles currently on the african experience away

I would like to see modern, spacious, light indoor houses constructed for the elephants at both parks.

The reason Port Lympne are successful with Black Rhino is because they are properly managed. Putting everything in together in a larger area would be a disaster in terms of managing complex species such a Black Rhinos.

But, I agree that One-horned rhinos would potentially do well, given the experience they already have with Black rhinoceros. I wonder if the same would be true of Orang-Utans, given their success with gorillas.

it think that the current barbary lion enclosure near the dinosaurs will become home tho bengal tigers. across the road will be 2 larde enclosure, 1 for amur tiger and 1 for snow leopard. sumartran rhino will return to the park and will share an enclosure with malayan tapir(will this work?)
will post more later

To increase its appeal it would be advisable to acquire orang utans and Indian rhinos for the Port Lympne site. I would equally hope for some island habitats to rehome the babirusas and anoas. The banteng in ... I am not too sure since they have another bovid - pure-bred water buffalo - on site at Port Lympne.

I found the sub-adult black rhino bulls on the reserve just great. It deconstructs the myth that this cannot be done. I again underline it would be the most unwise move to change the set up with black rhino management. Anything really ..., that threatens the very fabric and essence of its essential black rhino breeding programme. It works so well, because they have found the right combinations and social groupings and several proven bulls on site. Something to behold and cherish ...
