Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2023

Further to this, I remember at the time of Anne’s rescue Whipsnade and Longleat were heavily involved in the discussions establishing whether it was feasible to incorporate her into a herd. It wasn’t as it was felt the dynamics (particularly concerning boisterous calves) would have been too overwhelming for her. Thus, the decision was made to house her at Longleat.

Personally I think Longleat was (&still is) the best option for Anne. The improvements to her health & mobility from all her keepers care is amazing, truly amazing success story

Personally, I’d like to see the return of African elephants to the park. They’ve got the space and, no doubt, got the budget to do a decent job, which they didn’t have with the original group. A shame they couldn’t rescue Howletts herd from their inevitable fate.

I appreciate people disagree with the Aspinall's plans, but is this not a bit of a low blow, which isn't needed. The Aspinall Elephants, are not surplus, or are they Elephants in need of rescue. They are well looked after, and given they will probably end up at a privately owned fenced reserve in Kenya, with no predators, it's highly unlikely they are being set up for inevitable fate as you put it.

I remember on animal park they said Anne’s haven could hold 4 elephants at once and I think it’s most likely they’ll either keep rescue elephants or maybe use it for different animals if elephants aren’t available, maybe the rhinos will move there

I think that it could suit the rhinos aswell and they can also have access to the rest of the big game park does anyone know why they stopped having the rhinos on the big game park

I believe it was a mix of them being a part of the Northern white rhino program as well as a few grumpiness issues. Hopefully they're reintroduced some day because watching the tractors chase them was a real highlight

Edit: Ignore this!

I asked this to a keeper back in June and it’s actually because one of them tested positive for Tb! So till they can verify this wasn’t a problem they can’t mix with other animals in the safari park.

That'd make more sense! But it's been a good few years since they were allowed out, maybe 5-6? Hopefully they're all alright, especially with how important their eggs are.

Saw an epi of Animal Park recently and was sad to hear that Spud the porcupine had passed away. He became a favourite of mine when they reported he had escaped his enclosure but had returned by himself. Quite a character in my book. Anyone know what happened to him and how old was he

Just watching Friday's animal park. While feeding the wolves Caleb says "Hazel and the girls are up front" have them put the other girls in with the pack now?

Last time I went I noticed the other wolf pen was covered over on the fence.

The plot thickens... today's episode showed the 3 females in a seperate enclosure (Lady, Meg & ? ) and keeper Caleb was talking to Hamza about introducing the new male to them. I'm a bit confused as to what is going on but its interesting!

As an aside, one of these three females has part of one ear missing so it seems this isn't a wolf from Cotswolds after all.

There are two wolves with parts of their ears missing in the episode (one right and one left) so ears are obviously a thing.

This episode pre dates the transfer of the wolves however and judging on pictures I’d still say that the left ear wolf is the female now at CWP but let’s see - happy to be wrong.

So let me get this right, Longleat have transferred 2 female wolves to Cotswold and their male has moved in the opposite direction? That could explain why the keepers wanted to identify which of the three girls would be most suitable as a mate for the new male in yesterday's programme - possibly lining up Meg as a potential new alpha female and moving on May and Lady to Cotswold seems the most likely scenario? Hopefully the wolves will feature again later in the week so we can hear a more up to date account of what is going on.

As an aside, do Cotswold have another potential alpha male or are they a non-breeding group now?

I'm getting a bit lost here LOL... so do you believe that Longleat have transferred some wolves to Cotswold, possibly in exchange for the new male? That could explain why the keepers wanted to identify which of the three girls would be most suitable as a mate for the new male in yesterday's programme - possibly lining up Meg as a potential new alpha female and moving on May and Lady?

Yes the transfer has already happened and two wolves arrived at CWP from Longleat in a swap they are now in the wolf enclosure at CWP and they are really nice too!

I was just trying to spot which ones they were from older footage and the Twitter link given the missing ear makes one of them more distinctive (perhaps less so given all the missing ears!).

I guess the transfer will be a featured in another episode as the male arrives etc.

Thanks for the info. I just checked online and tomorrow's episode will apparently feature the new male and it also refers to Meg as the new matriach so presumably it will be May and Lady who have gone to Cotswold as they were living with Meg in an enclosure seperated from the main wolf pack.

Interesting times, and I hope the new introductions are a success. So where does this leave Cotswold out of interest; do they have another male?

They just have the two females now so don’t know if any plans. They have bred wolves before there but it’s a nice space for the two as well.

The new male Scimitar Horned Oryx has just arrived. His name is Baelish and he arrived from Flamingo Land to join the female and in the hopes of breeding with female oryx, Mesta
Brilliant news. How many SHO do they hold nowadays? I always remember the herd was impressive but they were hard to count on my last visit due to it being frigidly midwinter.

Interesting watching the YouTube about the wolves, so they are starting a new pack with Meg and Terry and just going to leave the other wolves in the drive through until I presume they die out? How will this work when they need to bring the wolves in do they have two houses to hold two packs of wolves?.
