This extinct mammal (of which two species are currently recognized) got its common name due to its convergence upon unrelated ungulates. A joke article announcing its rediscovery was published in Science on one April Fools’ Day.

This amphibian inhabits Australia
This animal is named after a distinct sound it makes that also sounds like a call a certain water bird would make

Alright!

The animal I'm thinking of, beginning with R...
It is a mammal that is often gray in colouration, though it is often heavily covered in scars. Across the world, it inhabits a wide range.
I do not think any are currently kept in captivity.
Can you guess the animal I am describing?

This S is a mammal, named after robes made from its pelt.
Its other common name suggests a relationship to another family in its order, but the animal is not closely related to other families.
