The male is now known as Muhimu.

At the Virginia Zoo, Noelle the Masai Giraffe gave birth on August 24 to a male calf named Henry. The father is the late Billy, who passed away earlier this year.

The Virginia Zoo on Instagram: "Oh, baby! Meet the newest addition to our Masai Giraffe herd, Henry. Henry was born to our 10-year-old female, Noelle, at the Virginia Zoo on Aug 24. Henry's father is our late giraffe, Billy, who was loved by many and unfortunately passed away earlier this year. “This calf is so special to us as a team as it is the last offspring of Billy,” Emily Spence, Assistant Curator of the Africa Department said. “The loss of such a longstanding staple of the Africa department has been difficult, but we are all so happy to know that his legacy is going to live on one last time. We can’t wait to share this calf with the zoo community in the near future.” We couldn't be more excited to welcome Henry and can't wait to see him grow! The purpose of this thread is to document the births, deaths, and transfers of Masai giraffe in North America. This is sort of like a finished product of a thread @Jaxton created a couple years ago and I'd also like to thank @EsserWarrior for your help! It should be noted that there are a couple private holders of this species such as Safari Enterprises and Timbavati Wildlife Park that I couldn't find any information for, so I have omitted them from this list. Safari Enterprises, which is ran by a man named Larry Johnson, is mostly known for taking in excess bachelor males from the SSP population. A number of San Diego born males have been transferred there and I think they are sent to different private holders from there. Anyway, excluding the individuals at those facilities, there are currently around 146 (64.82) Masai giraffes at 38 facilities. Eight (3.5) surviving calves have been born in 2021 so far: 0.1 Eleanor and 0.1 Mawe at SDZ, 0.1 Tiana at Virginia, 1.0 Zeke at Cameron Park, 0.1 Providence at Greenville, 1.0 Humphrey at DAK, 1.0 JD at The Wilds, and 0.1 Alika at Franklin Park. There are also 3 confirmed pregnancies in the population, 0.1 Adia and 0.1 Audrey at Santa Barbara are due in January and July 2022 respectively while 0.1 Mstari at Toronto is due in early 2022. The population is doing well but no where near as good as the generic giraffe SSP so there is definitely a push to grow this population out. And as always, please let me know if I've made any errors, if you have any information I'm missing, or if you know more about the private holders. Enjoy! :)

Generally the LA Zoo mentions such loans in those reports in advance of any anticipated/recommended moves, at least that's been what I've noticed over the years as a member who pays attention to the reports. Some moves can take awhile or might never happen.

In the minutes for the April 2023 Commission meeting it states:

"Our young Male Giraffe is in conflict with his father and will be going to the Columbus Zoo and the other young male will be going to Oregon."

Based on that description, and in light of my conversation with one of the educators at the LA Zoo, James left for the Oregon Zoo earlier this month. "Shaq", the young male born in April 2022, must be the male slated to move to the Columbus Zoo.

Correction: Based on the social media post from the Columbus Zoo today, James moved there and not to the Oregon Zoo:

That's what it would appear will happen based on what was mentioned in the LA Zoo Minutes noted above as far as one brother going to Columbus and the other to Oregon, but until the move actually occurs, it's just an educated guess.
