Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

July/August 2023 News Not Mentioned:

On July 27th, it was announced that the zoo transferred (1.1) lowland anoas named Teal'c and Oana to the Berlin Zoo in Berlin, Germany earlier in 2023.

⚖️ At the beginning of the year, two lowland anoas moved to us from Chester Zoo. The male is called Teal'c and will be 22 years old in a few days, the female is called Oana and is ten years younger – and smaller. Because in anoas, the females are significantly smaller than the males. ℹ️ Anoas are not particularly big anyway. They are the world's smallest species of wild cattle. They stand less than one metre at the shoulder and weigh a maximum of 300 kilograms. ⚖️ #flachlandanoa #lowlandanoa #anoa #zooberlin #berlinzoo #paarhufer #rinder #cattle"

On August 8th, it was announced that the zoo will acquire (0.0.2+?) greater flamingos from the Africa Alive Resvere in Suffolk.

Is there any lowland anoa left now?
As I've not seen any in the past 3 months. Nice to know if I can stop looking for them.

Hopefully will see it tomorrow.

Lovely day at the zoo today but left early because the heat was exhausting. A few things of note that might have been mentioned already so apologies if so:
  • Fruit Bat Forest is closed for maintenance
  • Philippine Spotted Deer are gone with no sign so assume they are off show or have left (I seem to remember something about them moving to the enclosure in front of Islands? But that was empty)
  • There is now a shelter in front of the tamandua house, much less glare now!!
  • The black rhino area is now fully blocked off, they can still be viewing near the entrance but this means the meerkats are now completely off show again.
  • Ecuador Amazon house is closed, I imagine this is because of the snow leopard enclosure construction.
Overall lots of active animals today, saw the tiger cubs and the elephants were playing in the pool. Unfortunately did not see the new jaguar or baby orangutan (did see Tuan though for the first time in a long time). Saw the acacia rat and adder for the first time as well!

Where can Tuan be seen?

Went to there yesterday, saw the deer. It's still on show, it's at between African Wild Dog and Babirusa exhibits.

Yes it's still there, saw only one of them, I don't know if there's other one in that exhibit. No signages of Philippine Spotted Deer around the exhibit, but it's still there

There's at least 2. Been 3 times in the past 2 months, and always seen 2.

This deer species prefers not to live in large groups, there is usually an adult pair and sometimes a youngster in the enclosure.

When did the other part to view them from get closed off because I used to love going down there to watch them to avoid crowds on the bridge

Made another visit today, Fruit Bat Forest is open again, seems like they have moved around all the branches and filled in the pond. Turkish spiny mice are no longer on show.

Other things of note:
  • Javan Green Magpies are offshow again with a sign saying new arrivals soon in the enclosure. Considering the magpie sign is still there I imagine they will be on show there again soon.
  • Islands is once again only accessible through the exit near the babirusa.
  • Miniature Monkeys has been swapped around, the pied tamarins are with the tamanduas now while all the others are in the opposite enclosure.
  • There's some kind of construction work in the undeveloped land near the Jaguar Coffee House, whatever it is it doesn't look like anything too major but we'll see how it progresses.
Quite a nice day overall, was surprised there is already a lot of school trips going on considering it's so early into term. Saw Inka for the first time, she is lovely... Also saw the fossa and rhinoceros hornbills outside for the first time which was nice.
