Australasian Red Panda Population

Red Panda Population Update – January 2023

Since the inception of the thread there have been five (1.4) successful births with 1.1 at Australia Zoo, 0.2 at Taronga and 0.1 Mogo (via email stated cub was actually a female). The population has slightly shrunk due to seemingly several deaths of ageing and middle-aged pandas but there has been a lot of recent movement to create new breeding pairs especially with the 2018 and 2019 cubs. The oldest panda in the region remains to be Pasang (2005 at Perth) who resides at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary after coming from Australia Zoo. As always, corrections and further information are welcomed.

From Auckland’s socials; they currently have three Red Panda:

1.0 Ramesh (20/01/2015) Sagar x Bo
1.0 Tashi (01/12/2018) Ramesh x Khela
0.1 Dahla (00/12/2019) Ramesh x Khela

Female Khela who was previously listed on this thread has apparently passed or been moved on to another facility. She would be nine this year.

Khela unfortunately died in 2022. Auckland Zoo noted today (with regards to Ramesh) that 8-10 years was an typical lifespan for red pandas; though a handful have made it to their mid to late teens in recent years.

I saw Tashi on my latest visit, he lives in the main red panda exhibit up the top of the zoo. Ramesh is in the old bear pit and Dalha is off display, out the back of the zoo.

Scarlett was transferred in from her birthplace at Australia Zoo:

0.1 Scarlett (21/12/2021) Nima x Mohini

Scarlett’s nother, Mohini, was born at Auckland Zoo to Sagar and Bo; with Bo being born at Melbourne Zoo, making it fitting her descendant should return to this zoo.

Welcome to ZooChat @JWJ.

The only way to update the population list on the first page; or any post which has been up beyond the edit time limit (59 mins for non-premium/standard members) is to request a moderator to edit it. Due to the frequency updates would be needed, we instead wait for the population thread author to provide an updated population list as and when they see fit. @WhistlingKite24 actually did this on the third post down of this page in January 2023.

Like I say, it’s up to the population thread author how often they revise their original lists. I’m the author of several population threads myself and usually post a revised population list in January each year; dependent on whether there’s been sufficient updates to warrant a new list (Galapagos giant tortoise for example is a population which hasn’t had any reported births/deaths this year so far; whereas African lions have seen several deaths and one birth reported this year so far).

You can find a list of our population threads here:
