Red River Hogs in UK Zoos.

That will give the zoo she is moved to the handling problem instead... But no doubt they would be told of her aggressive disposition and she may be difficult. I saw a TV film the other night about Gabon's wildlife- mostly forest elephants but also gorillas and mandrills. Some shots showed Red River Hogs, including one shot where there were at least twenty or more in the group- very spectacular- I hope we will see some bigger groups in our zoos too.

I missed that show. Did they have any clips of Giant forest hogs? Bongorob mentioned that Chester would like to get this species.

NO, I don't think so. The Mandrills in one park live in enormous numbers, up to a thousand in a single group, these are called 'hordes' I don't think Chester will ever get near that. Colchester's group is quite big tho', about twenty (Chester's females came from it) .

well i finally decided to tune in to "red river hogs in UK zoos" - only to find its about drills....

I have seen this strange phenomen in other threads too. At least drills and red river hogs live in the same area.

Yes. But getting back to the subject, or nearer anyway, do any zoos in the world hold the Bush pig? I believe San Diego zoo has kept them, Do they still hold them.

No its not, its all about Red River Hogs-with just a little pinch of Drill to add flavouring... I think yuo're just jealous you haven't got any Red River Hogs or Drills(?) in Australia. Red River Hogs are great- I wouldn't mind a pair in my garden...

There is a zoo in africa that has about 200 drills. Not a single mandrill according to ISIS.

(This isn't worth starting a separate thread for). Its actually a rescue and breeding centre for Endangered Forest Primates, including Drills. They live in semi-natural enclosures i.e. natural vegetation but enclosed by electric fencing. They have now bred a large number. Start a thread on Drills/Mandrills if you want to go further.

I will star a new thread about drills ( the monkey, not the power tool !!)
I agree grantsmb, Red river hogs are great. I'd still prefer a tapir in my garden but I'll just have to settle with my 2 guinea pigs.

grant - yes maybe i am. i would like some red river hogs - but right now i think us australians are just struggling to hold on to whatever inbred hoofstock we have!! i believe that bushpigs and RR hogs are indeed the same species, just two seperate races, correct?

on the drills - i have seen a doco on this rescue breeding centre. did you see the same one? there was a western couple i think, runnng it, and they also rehabilitated chimps and there was a poor fella in a local zoo they were struggling to acquire....

All the references I have seen list the bush pig and the red river hog as two species. Some also give subspecies of each. I can't remember ever seeing a bush pig but in all the illustrations I have seen the only difference I can find between the bush pig and the red river hog is the colour. So maybe they are one and the same species.

On second thoughts, a pair of Red River hogs would ruin my garden in no time... Regarding the differencs between Bush Pig and RR.Hog, see BongoRob. I thought it was only the same difference as between the cape and forest buffalo...

Drills- yes, that's the place ( Is the charity that runs it called Pandrillus?) , its the only one I believe... They breed just as they would in the wild, but protected in an enclosure from hunting.

I've been racking my brains to think where I may have seen a bushpig in captivity- and I think I have it now. There was one at Bristol Zoo in their old 1950's Antelope House which I saw when I was a nipper (it was situated where the Tapirs are now...) The animal was simply labelled 'Bushpig' He was very similar to the RR. Hog in size and shape but was a grey/brown colour with no white dorsal stripe. There's memory for you...:)

Chester Zoo used to have a male bush pig called Mr Higgins. He was kept in the camel house (now the okapi house). I've been visiting Chester Zoo regularly since 1967 so I probably saw him. I just can't remember.

In the Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals, Jonathan Kingdon reports the possibility of hybrids between bush pigs and red river hogs from Uganda and Zaire. If this is the case and the hybrids breed successfully it will confirm they are members of the same species.

And talking of long past Bushpig exhibits, I remember seeing Red River Hog at two Uk zoos in the long past- before the more recent imports and breedings.

In the late 1960's,early 70's, Dudley Zoo had one fine male- I believe he was called 'Thurston'(or something like that?) while around the same time Paignton had one rather decrepit -looking female. As far as I know they were the only examples in UK and I sometimes wished they would be paired up- of course this was rather before the days when breeding was paramount so it never happened...

Do you have a picture of Him? Your sun bear picture is very good.

I have put a link on the general forum to A very nice photo gallery with nice pictures of San Diego zoo. It has bush pigs on it.

Sorry, no picture of him. Like I said I don't remember if I ever saw him. I had forgotten about the red river hog at Dudley until grantsmb mentioned him. I do remember seeing him. Thanks for your comments on my bear picture hornbill, it is one of the first animal photos I ever took. I was 10 at the time, so I'm quite pleased.
