Monarto Safari Park Monarto Safari Park News 2023

I'm surprised that Monarto's Black Rhino Bulls haven't been transferred to breed interstate (that I'm aware of). All I see is the beauties just running around having fun, but not really helping their species. Is AI being used or is it a genetic issue with the cows interstate?

They were transfered out of WTZ because they are related to them there, they need unrelated females to be imported,

1.0 Induna (Monarto) and 0.1 Bakhita (Dubbo) represents the only remaining unrelated pairing in the region.

At a minimum, Induna should be exchanged for a Dubbo bull; or Bakhita transferred to Monarto.

Tribute to Tsotsi (1989-2023)

The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (supported by Zoos SA) have named a female chimpanzee infant in their care ‘Tsotsi’ in honour of the alpha male of Monarto’s troop that passed away this year.

From Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary socials:

We’ve named her in honor of a very special chimpanzee from our friends from Monarto Safari Park - Zoossa - Adelaide Zoo in Australia, who passed away earlier this year.

Laura Hanley, one of the persons who has been working with the chimpanzees at the zoo for so long and a good friend of ours, has been so supportive of Tacugama, helping us unconditionally.

We are more than happy to have Tsotsi’s legacy here in Tacugama and keep this beautiful connection between Monarto Zoo, Laura, and all our Tacu Friends from Australia.

I was at Monarto today, and had a chat with one of the chimp keepers. No clear alpha male yet! Boyd supports Gombe, and Sandali has more support from the females and Enzi. A lot of displaying from Enzi today— though he was put in his place when it got a bit much. DNA tests have reportedly been sent off at last to determine Zola and Happy’s sires.

The volunteer guide said during the tour that the two hippos are expected to arrive in October— very exciting.

That’s fantastic news to hear hippopotamus are still on track for arriving this year. All going well with crate training, this should be Brindabella (1990) and her daughter, Pansy (2013).

Great we got news on the hippos, I was told Friday by a meerkat volunteer, that "it just depends and that they will be in Wild Africa when it's done", perhaps she wasn't privy to this information?

One Mongolian horse calf and 5 ring-tail lemurs were born this week to kick of spring at Monarto, announced today. No news yet on whether Makena is pregnant again

Lion pregnancy:

It’s too early to tell if Makena is pregnant again. She only would have cycled again approx a week after losing her cub and if pregnant already, signs wouldn’t yet be apparent. All going well, she could deliver cubs around mid-December.

Lemur births:

As reported on socials:

The lemurs are single infants born to Spindles, Clementine and Lulu; and twins born to Blossom.

I was told by a staff member at Auckland Zoo that they had no immediate plans to import a female Bornean orangutan. Daya arrived around a month later. It’s possible she wasn’t privy to this information, but given how common it is for transfers to fall through (even nationally/regionally), I think they prefer to keep it under their hats. Somebody once said, a transfer isn’t happening until it’s happening, which pretty much sums it up.
It would be interesting to know if the exhibit is completed if they are talking about shipping next month!

It sounded like it was near completion on @Swanson02’s visit, so fingers crossed it’s just the finishing touches. The main question now is whether they’re ready to receive Kani. He’ll require separate housing from the cows and they may have rushed through what they could to get the species on site.

With a new elephant exhibit to be built in the very near future with 3-5 animals arriving. Also now we know 3 Hippos are due next month and the park interested I'm acquiring two new antelope species it appears its all happening at once. When/if the rhino importation happens I will need to book a flight to see both Adelaide zoo and Monarto zoo, Looking forward to lt. :D:cool:

As reported by @marmolady in Post #125 of this thread, two common hippopotamus are coming to Monarto Safari Park next month. The individuals have yet to be confirmed, but it was originally reported by the zoo that they would be Brindabella (1990) and Pansy (2013) from Werribee.

Hopefully the transfer of the breeding bull from Dubbo, Kani (2020), will follow in the coming months.
