Dublin Zoo Dublin Zoo news 2023

Thanks Jana, it certainly seems to be very problematic for captive display birds. All of the flamingos at dublin are vaccinated, so hopefully it won't develop too badly. I wonder how well the vaccine works as a preventive measure.?

Went to Dublin Zoo today to see the aye-ayes for the first time. It was quite a hectic day with so many visitors (this still being the summer holidays), but I was happy I got to see the aye-ayes in their house.

Inside the house, there are two separate enclosures for the male and female (plus offspring), as aye-ayes are solitary animals. As to be expected, the house is almost pitch black inside, with infrared lights in the enclosures to aid in seeing the lemurs. There are also CCTV screens above the windows showing the full enclosure, which gives visitors another view of the animals. I watched the aye-ayes in both enclosures clambering along the branches, occasionally coming to the ground and/or probing the bark for food.

Other observations:
- I saw both snow leopards today, taking a doze in their caves.
- The lions are still in their old enclosure, with the tigers still next door (I didn't see them but their signage was up). I first heard about them swapping enclosures last year and it still hasn't happened.
- There was some construction works going on at the macaque islands. The zoo's website says that "the macaque troop has been moved temporarily to facilitate improvements to their habitat".
- The bull rhino house looked more or less complete.
- Construction on the Society House also looked finished, with just a bit of work being done on the garden part.

The 2022 annual report of the Zoological Society of Ireland is now available to view online: https://www.dublinzoo.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Dublin-Zoo-Annual-Report-2022-Digital.pdf
  • The report confirms that the zoo's previous male snow leopard, Qiemo, died of heart failure not long before the Himalayan Hills was opened.
  • It also mentions the enclosure swap between the tigers and the lions, and says that the lions' move is scheduled to be ready in 2023. When I visited last week, they were still in their old enclosure, and there's just three months left of this year, so let's watch this space.
  • If the census tables (page 58) are anything to go by, the last ostrich left last year. However, the species' absence seems to have been temporary, as Zootierliste mentions Dublin as having ostrich again as of this year.

The Zootierliste list for the zoo isn’t entirely accurate as there is no ostriches in the zoo currently.

I guess you're right, because I don't remember seeing any ostriches from my visits this year. I had only assumed they were back based on what Zootierliste says, but then again it's not always up-to-date or accurate with its info.

I have a screenshot but I don’t know how to upload it
If you press ‘upload a file’ as seen below you’ll be able to.

Are the elephants leaving Dublin?

Oh wow. For a while they had a sizeable heard, then. Where are the ones leaving going?
