Cologne Zoo Cologne Zoo News

A couple of interesting amphibian breedings from Cologne Zoo have been mentioned in the most recent EAZA Tag Report:
  • The first breeding of the Borneo pygmy toad (Ingerophrynus divergens) at Cologne
  • The first breeding of the Mayotte frog (Blommersia transmarina) in a zoo

A male Aardvark has arrived on temporary loan from Arnhem. He is Willow, born at Longleat in 2020

It is intended that he will mate with both female's at Koln during his stay. The female at Arnhem is not yet mature enough to breed so rather than have him doing nothing in the short term, a "holiday" to Koln was arranged. He will return to Arnhem in 2024.

Fingers crossed! Do they only have females there apart from this short term loan?

Yes. Unfortunately there is a big shortage of male Aardvark within Europe. Last time I looked it was around 20 males to 40+ females. So many places (such as Koln) just hold female's to free up space for breeding at zoos that do have a male

Thanks for the information. Is there any evidence that captive pairs produce more females in captivity, or is it just a quirk? Here’s hoping Köln produces some offspring!

Some new information:
- The last sunwatcher toadhead agama (Phrynocephalus helioscopus) passed away
- The red-spotted burrowing frog (Leptodactylus laticeps), probably their most beautiful and most rare frog species, has also passed away. He died of old age and was visible in the zoo for over 10 years straight.
- The jambu fruit dove (Ramphiculus jambu) population has shrunken to a single male. This rare species will soon be lost in European zoos, with this being the last specimen. He is currently not on show.
- A new species of the frog genus Kurixalus is on show in the Gia Lai pricklenape (Acanthosaura nataliae) terrarium. This species is not yet described to science, the frogs are not labelled either so it requires quite a search to find it.
- The enclosures for Bengal monitors (Varanus bengalensis), psychedelic rock gecko (Cnemaspis psychedelica) and all the closed-off bird enclosures in the rainforest house are under construction. This means none of these species, including the birds-of-paradise, are currently on show.
- The park received three Damaraland turtle doves (Streptopelia capicola damarensis), this subspecies is unique in a European zoo. They are kept together with a single bird without subspecies status, so the changes of photographing one are 75%.

During the night and morning of the 25th of January 4 Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) were born, this is the first lion birth at Cologne Zoo in 20 years. The first time mother is 10-year old female Gina, the father is Navin.

Sadly one of the young passed away, presumably because mother “Gina” unintentionally crushed it with her weight.

A few days ago the new Zootier des Jahres, "Zoo animal of the year", was revealed in the Aquarium of Kölner Zoo. This year will focus on the Gecko!
