Two updates from Lion Country Safari Florida:

On August 21st, Lion Country Safari Florida announced that (0.1) Lissa passed away the week before at age 43 due to inoperable colic. She is the second rhinoceros to die at the park this year after Buck (age 55) died this past February.

Virginia Zoo is on baby watch with a new calf due in the coming weeks

17 year old 0.1 Dakari from SDZ WAP has joined Mumbles and Kiazi at Zoo Atlanta per SSP breeding recomendation

Zoo Atlanta on Instagram: "We're very pleased to welcome Dakari, a 17-year old female southern white rhinoceros. Dakari arrived in Atlanta on October 13, 2023, from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Her move was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) White Rhino Species Survival Plan® (SSP). Dakari will ultimately meet Mumbles, the 12-year-old male southern white rhino at Zoo Atlanta, and 21-year old female Kiazi. Zoo Atlanta announced in May 2023 that Kiazi, who arrived at the Zoo in 2021 on another recommendation from the White Rhino SSP, is expecting a calf between December 2023 and February 2024. The birth would make Mumbles a first-time father. Zoo Atlanta is an active member of many SSPs, which are collaborative programs working to ensure self-sustaining, genetically diverse animal populations in AZA zoos. Unlike other rhino species, which are more solitary in nature, white rhinos are known to travel and associate in groups in the wild. The largest of the five remaining rhino species, they are not actually white. The moniker “white rhino” is instead believed to have originated with the Afrikaans word wyd, meaning “wide” – a reference to the shape of white rhinos’ upper lips. While poaching for their horns is a serious issue for all rhinos and has already resulted in the extinctions and near-extinctions of some species, southern white rhinos are especially vulnerable because they often occur in herds, making it easier for poachers to locate them. Powdered rhino horn is believed by some cultures to possess medical properties, although rhino horns are made of keratin – the same substance found in human hair and fingernails – and have no known medicinal value. Dakari will have an opportunity to become acclimated to her new home before being introduced to Mumbles and Kiazi and before exploring the outdoor habitat of the Zoo’s rhino complex, which was redesigned for rhinos with the opening of the African Savanna in 2019. Did they disclose which female at Virginia was pregnant?

Here is a list of all the Southern White Rhinos in North American AZA accredited zoos, there are many others in private collections such as Rum Creek and White Oak so I have excluded those from this list since it is very difficult if not impossible to track all those individuals down. There is a total of 174 (68.104) known Southern White rhinos in 45 different facilities in North America accredited by the AZA. There are two pregnancies that were made public by their respective facilities: Lola and Jao at DAK who are both due in fall/winter 2021. And also, according to @Mai Thai four females at The Wilds are pregnant and due in Winter 2021 (it is unknown which females are pregnant). Two calves have been born within the North American AZA population this year: Dhoruba at ZooTampa in June and an unnamed male calf in July. SWR are doing quite well in terms of breeding in this population but this year has been rather slow for births since only two calves have been born in over 7 months. Anyways, as always please let me know if you have any info that I need (indicated in red), if I have made any mistakes, or missed any rhinos or zoos!

BTW: There are some individuals who share a name with another so to avoid confusion I have listed their studbook number.
