North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

It should be permanent. Raja has absolutely no reason now to be at Saint Louis. There’s no one for him to breed with, and a new bull should come to Saint Louis instead.
Yes swapping Raja with another bull would be amazing, and a good idea. It will likely be one of the Denver, or OKC, bulls if this actually ends up happening.

I wouldn’t count on this. Raja was born there and was a big draw. They had the opportunity over the years and never did it. Now his daughters are getting too old for first calves.

Houston is gonna be a no I think. Thailand is not going anywhere, Tucker according to @IndianRhino has a breeding recommendation with Joy, Teddy is too young to breed, and the rest of Shanti’s calves that are males are related to the herd in Saint Louis. Fort Worth I also doubt, considering Romeo has only sired 2 calves there that are both males since 2021-2023 and the other one Colonial Tusk is his name I think I heard is a non behavioral bull. Oklahoma City Zoo is another no, because they want Achara pregnant fast, the zoo has already started breeding her with Bowie and or Kandula cause she just hit sexual maturity and Rex still has a breeding recommendation with Asha. Denver is the only likely one. Nelson would not be going to Saint Louis (he’s related to the girls there), Groucho I also doubt, which leaves Billy, Jake, Chuck and Bodhi.

Than again though, there is always Samudara at the Oregon Zoo

If Saint Louis is concerned about a big draw just get another bull that looks like him. They’re not too old yet but they should have already had multiple calves by now. If they’re not concerned about breeding elephants, than Ellie, Maliha, Jade and Priya for all I care should go somewhere else. Perhaps Tulsa Zoo if Saint Louis want to keep their worthless bull Raja so badly.

If a big if St. Louis gets a new bull it would be nice to have one of the young bulls from Dublin when they are imported to here.

Has anyone in the US considered importing any young bulls from the Emmen Radza line I believe they have surplus bulls in Europe?

Well, the U.S. for both species, needs as many elephants as possible. I mean let’s face it.

The U.S. African Elephant population which @Hyak_II has mentioned numerous times has a bull shortage. We need more bulls with genetic variation. Couldn’t hurt if some of Europes bulls were sent our way to the U.S.

Could getting semen from wild bulls be another option, its been done before with success?

The two young bulls destined for Cincinnati are only six years old currently, so not of breeding age yet, but will presumably be used for breeding.

Considering their current assumption, my assumption is that they’ll *probably* be separated from their mothers soon after the arrival to Cincinnati and potentially be sent elsewhere.
