Polar bears in Europe

Kap is has been moved from Hamburg to Karlsruhe.

Hagenbeck (Offizielle Seite) on Instagram: "In Hamburg sagt man Tschüss…

Kap arrived in Karlsruhe this evening. It is planned that he will also provide offspring in Karlsruhe in the medium term. With the exception of the cub in Hamburg, his line is not represented in the European polar bear population. Therefore, he is genetically a particularly valuable polar bear. However, it is not the intention that he will breed with the current female in Karlsruhe, Charlotte. So a new female will have to come to Karlsruhe first.

At Prague Zoo, 19-year-old female polar bear Berta was euthanised today. Despite the best efforts of vets and animal caretakers, her cancer proved incurable. No new female will come to the current polar bear exhibit, leaving male Tom alone.

Has anything been posted already on here that Peak WP started holding bears? I don’t know what animals they got them from though.

They got them from Orsa Rovdjurspark, a carnivore specialist zoo in Sweden, which is unfortunately closing down, so the animals need to find new homes. I believe which that still leaves two females at Orsa, which are likely the animals which are planned to arrive at Jimmy’s Farm fairly soon.

Oh yeah, heard about that place, shame it’s closing it seemed great. Jimmy’s Farm won’t be much of a farm once it has the world’s largest land carnivore!

There are also some posts about it in the Peak park specific thread and pictures in the gallery of the new enclosure.

Another new holder for polar bears in Europe this year! A brand new polar bear enclosure will open at Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park on 21 October. The enclosure is about five acres in size and includes multiple ponds up to 14 metres deep.

From the closed Orsa Rovdjurspark, 17-year-old female polar bear Ewa has moved to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park. Her 9-year-old daughter Miki had also come with her, but she died during transport from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Does anybody know the name, gender and origin of Polar bears in:

- Zoo Rostock (I saw 3 bears together, two was playing together in the water and one was walking alone in the same enclosure)
- Zoom Gelsenkirchen (I saw 3 bears(including Antonia) and all the 3 has their own enclosure)
- Pairi Daiza (I saw 2 together)
- Sóstó Zoo (I saw only the Rostocker Fiete)
- Zoo Hannover

How is it possible that they keep getting polar bears in that concrete pit, they have all the chances to phase them out in what is likely the worst enclosure in the EU for polar bears....
I know the polar bear enclosure is not big in Budapest but they take care well of the bears. They have climated indoor, big pool, toys and food for enrichment. There are zoos which are worse place for polar bears (for example Palic)

Thank You very much for the info and useful website too!

Do you know which polar bears lived in Sóstó Zoo before Jorek and Ootek? They lived in the zoo when I started following them.
???
Jorek - Ootek
Ootek - Zora
Zora - Fiete
Fiete - Sneznaja

What I can find is that Sóstó Zoo started keeping polar bears in 2003. In 2003 Ootek came to Sóstó Zoo and in 2008 Jorek came to Sóstó Zoo. I can't find anything about a possible second polar bear that would have lived with Ootek before Jorek's arrival.

3-year-old female polar bear Inuvik has moved from Copenhagen Zoo to Skandinavisk Dyrepark. At that age, polar bear cubs often leave their mothers. She is likely to stay temporarily at Skandinavisk Dyrepark before a final home is found for her. Should she form a match with one of the males present, she could stay. Otherwise, she will probably move again next year.

At Copenhagen Zoo, the move was also convenient. Damage was found to the pool in the enclosure. The two other polar bears will stay in the old polar bear enclosure for the next few months. So that the pool can be repaired.

At Tallinn Zoo, polar bear Frida gave birth to three cubs on Friday 17 November. One of the three cubs was stillborn. The other two cubs made sounds, and Frida let them drink. Yet by Monday morning, all the cubs had died. The cubs will be examined to find out the cause of death.

This is not the first time Frida's young have not survived. On the recommendation of the coordinator of the breeding programme, Frida was given this last chance to reproduce. An earlier health check of Frida revealed no problems.
