NEW SPECIES!!!

Altina now have Black and white ruffed lemur:

Reported on socials:

Altina is very proud to have joined yet another amazing Conservation Program
for the Critically Endangered Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur!

Welcoming a breeding pair will mean Altina can jump straight into assisting
this stunning Lemur species for generations to come!

In conjunction with Darling Downs Zoo, Altina have imported, the gorgeous male “Tsiky”, from Hamerton Zoological Park in England. This new genetic line will help with the Australasian Conservation Program immensely, and adds versatility to the breeding program!

Kintana, the Australian born female, with masses of personality, should make a fine match to our shy, but stunning new boy.

An import too! How good!

An import too! How good!

After a regional lull in breeding Black and white ruffed lemur, it’s good to see renewed interest ahead of the anticipated imports of Red ruffed lemur. It’s a clear indication the ZAA intends to maintain both species within the region. As @Zorro has mentioned before, they’re a small species and so it’s not hard to accomodate both; but it’s a nice surprise nonetheless.

On September 13th, the zoo announced they transferred a (1.0) longhorn cow named Mater and a (1.0) domestic cow (breed not specified) named Marshmellow to an unspecified private facility.

Slender-tailed meerkat birth:

1.1 Slender-tailed meerkats were born to Allan and Lola on 04/10/2023.

This also answers the mystery of who Brian and Amber (DOB 26/04/2023) were born to as the birth announcement lists them and another 1.1 (Jango and Ellie) as siblings of these new pups.

Something exciting is coming soon…

Altina have teased the birth of a birth of a species they’ve never bred before. Cotton-top tamarin seem the likely candidates, with the zoo importing a breeding pair earlier this year; but even more exciting would be Spotted hyena!

The zoo received a bull Southern white rhinoceros 22 months ago to pair with their two cows, so that’s another possibility; though the post referenced it being a surprise, which all but rules that out. Pregnancy signs are usually quite overt in this species during the final months.

I believe they are both imported which should bring the parks number to 4.

One is imported (the female):

0.1 Malika (13/09/2020) Imported 2021 (South Africa)

1.0 Amani (09/04/2009) Mwenka x Kigali
1.0 Mkali (09/04/2009) Mwenka x Kigali

Amani and Mkali come from Monarto.

The male Altina imported (Cheka) was sent to Mogo. He’s a sibling of Malika.

And the surprise birth is…

Black and white ruffed lemurs. Triplets (2.1) born to Kintana, who arrived this year. She would have been pregnant on arrival as factoring in gestation doesn’t allow time for the new male (from the UK) to be the father; and the previous post mentioned the birth was a surprise.

NGL, I was hoping for Spotted hyena cubs, but a first time breeding success for the zoo nonetheless. Congrats to Altina!
