What pets/animals do you currently have?

Hi Alwaysevergreen, noticed you have some single animals, I know a company called Fauna Trade, who I would highly recommend. If you're interested I could pass on contact details .Hope you're enclosure building is going well

I know Will and Matt already. A lot of my singles are rescues, or animals which don't do well housed together. I don't actually wish or intend to breed a lot of what I have.

Some of the animals I've acquired have been ones that were bred by accident, animals people can no longer afford to house and keep, or simply unwanted surplus.

Some of the other animals, are ones I have a personal interest in, such as squirrels. I hope the Squirrels breed, as I would like larger groups, or to spread them around smaller collections / colleges, so people get to see them more.

Some of the animals I have, are not of good health as well, under veterinary care, and just being given a chance. I get offered bits and pieces every week, but there is only so much room and time, and whilst I will try to give a home to something that needs it, you have to be practical. The reason the animals are in singles is because I want it that way, but thanks for your concern.

Do you know I very rarely get offered any animals, probably because I try and keep my collection private. Recently bred Prevosts for the first time, Chuffed with that. I'm glad you're aware of Fauna Trade, Matthew is a real gentleman, unlike some in the trade. I feel for you and the vet bill(ouch),I'm lucky that my vet is not only very experienced in exotics but also sympathetic to the bills. I wish you all the best for the future

All zoos have highs and lows, today here at Strathmorezoo we experienced both
The Low ...our male Azara's agouti died under sedation whilst being prepared for an x-ray ,the vet administered adrenaline but to no avail We took him into the vet first thing because of him losing appetite over the previous 2 days, the x-ray went ahead to show that his abdomen and thorax were completely full of fluid which was almost certainly caused by an infection. We are waiting for a full vet report
The High...our Prevost squirrel kits emerged from their nestbox this afternoon, they looked absolutely brilliant playing

I mostly keep invertebrates but i want to keep more amphibians in the future so here is my list:
0.1.0 Euscorpius italicus
1.0.0 Hypoctonus ranguensis
0.0.2 Socotra island blue baboon tarantula (Monocentropus balfouri)
1 Q 25 W Messor barbarus
1 Q 3 W Colobopsis truncata
1 Q 10 W Black garden ant (Lasius niger)
0.0.4 Oriental fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis)

Yesterday, whilst in Kent, I was lucky enough to bring home a couple of Lesser Egyptian Gerbill's who are great fun to watch.

Today, however, is a sad day. The final one of my Grey Short-Tailed Opossum's has passed away this morning. Chloe had a nice nature some of the time, and whilst she was not one who liked to be handled, she liked a little scratch and would happily chase after locusts and morioworms and absolutely loved boiled egg. She was approaching 4, and came to me after she failed to breed for another owner and they didn't want an aging opossum. She had a nice little enclosure since she came to me, and I used to enjoy watching her run round her wheel, and only 3 days ago, I was passing her locusts by hand. She was quite flighty when she came to me, but she grew in confidence and I use to love going in the little nocturnal room at night and watch her and the other small animals play.

This morning however, when I went to check on her, there was two 4th hoppers jumping about her enclosure and her fresh water from the night before was clean (very unlike Chloe, who used to love making a mess of everything). There was also morios and meal worms in her tube, which she would always scavenge on. I lifted up her house to see her, and she didn't look right, she was not sleeping, and not active at all, she looked in some discomfort. I placed her in a pot so I could take a closer look at her and she was a little bloated and it there was signs of over grooming around her back and backside and she seemed in a bit of discomfort, but was not remotely interested in her food.
I made a quick call to the vet and sent a small video and they were of the opinion, that she was close to death and there would be likely little they could do for her.
I made her house nice and comfy, and put down some fresh soft bedding, and added in some paper towel and placed her calmly back in her house, nice and warm and comfortable. I knew that when I checked her again she would most likely have passed away, but I wanted her in a nice comfy enclosure and to be at peace.

I gave it a couple of hours and went back to check on her, and she had passed away.

Chloe was just over 3 years old when she came to me, so I knew she wouldn't be here a long time, but she was lovely and I grew very fond of her. She was one of the first exotic pets / rescues, I took on, and when I got her, she had next to no hair on her, had often been attacked by her previous mate and needed a lot of reassuring. Chloe grew with confidence and had a happy life, was always spoilt and was easily one of the most loved in my collection.

Today is a sad day for me, and I hope I can get some more Short-Tailed Opossums in the future, but Chloe will never be forgotten and she will be off to the crematorium tomorrow, so I can get her ashes in a small urn and keep them as a memory forever more. She certainly ignited a passion in me to take on rescues and small mammals, and I'll miss her terribly.

I feel for you, I would like to say that it gets easier, unfortunately because you care ,it doesn't.

So sorry for your loss.

And finally ,Gracie our mad but beautiful callico tabby cat
You have probably guessed what my career was
Cheers
Sad news today at Strathmorezoo, our female Cotton Top Tamarin had a miscarriage, which left her pretty weak. Fortunately by late afternoon she was looking brighter and finding her appetite, especially mealworms.

Well what a day...Milly the female Cotton-top who miscarried on Friday was rushed to the vets this morning with an infection. Vet administered large dose of antibiotics. When I got her home I gave her Calpol ,fortunately she seems to be responding well, antibiotics to be continued for 7 days Eventually started to clean out and found 3 prevost kits in a nest box .All the fun of zookeeping!!

It's been a while since I posted, and there's been a few changes to my collection, which has grown in certain areas and shrunk in others.

I am hoping to secure a nice sized small holding just for the animals by the end of this year, which will allow me to do some more building and hopefully bring in some more exciting animals into next year. I've seen 2/3 places, and have someone willing to buy the land and rent to me, but will come down to whether change of use can be secured or not.

Anyway, less of that and here is what's currently residing at my home, which seems to have more animal rooms than human ones, and the garden is fast running out of space.

0.1 Fennec Fox (On temporary loan to Boston College, whilst I am building her a new exhibit)

0.1 Prehensile Tailed Porcupine
1.0 Skunk
2.0 Yellow Tooth Cavy
1.1 Northern Palm Squirrel
0.1 Finlayson's Squirrel
1.2 American Red Squirrel
1.2 Prevost Squirrel
1.1 Ezo Flying Squirrel
2.4.5 Tamiops / Swinhoes
1.1 Burmese Red Belied Squirrel
0.2 Japanese Squirrel
1.0 Fox Squirrel
0.1 Neumann's Grass Rats
5.7.31 Barbary Stripped Mice (Zebra Mice)
2.0 Chinchilla
5.0 Sugar Gliders
3.5 Harvest Mice
1.1 Cactus Mice
1.0 Three Banded Aramdillo
1.1 Lesser Egyptian Jird
1.1 Bushy Tailed Jird
1.1 White Tailed Antsangy
0.1 Sengi
0.2 Northern Tree Shrew
0.4 African Pygmy Dormice
1.1 Greater Jerboa

0.0.2 Yellow Headed Gecko
1.1 Peacock Day Gecko
1.0 Giant Day Gecko
1.0 Crested Gecko
1.1 Blue-Tailed Day Gecko
1.1 Gold Dust Day Gecko
1.0 Panther Chameleon
1.0 Jackson's Chameleon

Hoping to pick up some more reptiles in April, having rehomed my Leopard Gecko and Yemen Chameleon recently. These were animals I took on when owners didn't want them and I tried to rehome.

I've also had a few departures having lost both my Brazilian Cavy in December, my male Finlayson Squirrel in January (was a old pair I got, female now lives with Cavy's), one of my Neumann's Grass Rats also died two weeks ago. All my African Pygmy Mice started predating on each other, and subsequently learned I was keeping them in too big an exhibit, and should had them paired up, rather than trying to start a colony. I'm yet to replace them, but plan to in the near future. As posted above, I lost my Short Tailed Opossum, and planned new ones did not mature. A number of Zebra Mice have moved on to other collections, as have some Harvest Mice youngsters.

Over the next 3 months, I have 2 more species of Squirrel due to arrive, one sooner rather than later, whilst all being well, another species of Glider is possible. Still hoping to bring in a Brush Tailed Possum, but this will not be until later in the year, or until I have new small holding set up, as the arrival of 2 new Squirrel species, will occupy the original planned space, and the new Fennec Exhibit is being built larger than I originally planned to.

Eventually, everything will move to the small holding in 2025, providing all goes to plan, which will then allow me to bring in some more animals at home, whilst builds are done at the site, which I hope to have secured within the next 6/7 months.

My distinction is if it has a name its a pet if not its just an animal. Granted I do live on a working farm
