San Francisco Zoo San Francisco Zoo News 2023

According to the most recent Joint Zoo Committee Meeting , the Zoo will be acquiring a Male Bairds Tapir from the Audubon Zoo.
Tapirs have been missing from the Zoos collection for nearly a decade. Great to see one being brought back! I've been complaining recently about how the Puente al Sur Exhibit needed to be better utilized. Good news

Whatever happened to the SF Zoo putting together a new master plan?

San Francisco Zoo welcomes pair of rare wild horses

It’s not really a masterplan, but creating an Asian conservation zone and grouping the asiatic species together is more of a major plan than the zoo’s had in a while. Over a decade ago the zoo was planning a North America region where the bears are. Besides the usual lack of funding, I strongly suspect that Oakland zoos plans for California trails gave SFZ less impetuous for doing their own North America region as the plan for it mysteriously disappeared.
S.F. zoos collection has skewed very heavily towards African and South American species in recent years so it’s great that they’re adding more geographical diversity to their collection.

Floyd was the herds resident bull for many years and fathered many calves. He passed away a few years ago. Hopefully the zoo gets a new one soon

The zoo says Floyd was a reticulated giraffe but he looked more like a Rothschild's giraffe
