Sorry if this may be a silly question, but what animals coexist with the giraffes, I’ve been trying to figure it out but I’ve found mixed answers :p

Given its proximity to the Reptile House, why not lightly renovate the space for komodo dragon?

EDIT: Looking at my photos from March 2023, I'd actually say that this space is practically *giftwrapped* for komodo dragon. Dayroom, large outdoor space, heavily planted, next to the Reptile House, minimal renovations required.

Do keep in mind that the former lion enclosure is a protected building, but I like your idea ;D

The Reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) have access to two enclosures, the
savannah enclosure and their seperation yard (formely their only enclosure.

The savannah enclosure is shared with a group of Grevy's zebras (Equus grevyi) and 3 male Greater kudus (Tragelaphus strepsiceros).
The other enclosure is shared with two Ankole longhorns.

Last Thursday I had a quick visit to the zoo, here are the changes that I came across.

The four-toed hedgehog enclosure is still empty, so is the Northern treeshrew (Tupaia belangeri) enclosure, not sure whether Artis still has this species. To my surprise the Degu (Octodon degus) was also empty, earlier this week they took out the substrate (which was replaced during my latest visit).

It seems that preparations are on the way for the dwarf mongooses to use the former meerkat outside enclosure. This enclosure has received new substrate and an information sign for the mongooses has been placed next to the enclosure. However it seems that the mongooses do not have access to this enclosure (yet).

At least 4 Blue-throated macaws (Ara glaucogularis) are now housed in the former yellow-throated marten. I persume that these are the 4 young that hatched last year and that this is a temporary enclosure for them.
This enclosure is now empty again.

In the insectarium the enclosure of the Giant Vietnamese walkingsticks was getting refurbished, the animals are currently behind the scenes.
There is also a new species on show in the insectarium, namely African fruit beetles (Mecynorhina torquata).

The new lion enclosure is really worth a visit, the lions can be seen in the outside enclosure during the morning and early afternoon. Afterwhich they can only be seen in their inside enclosure, which can be viewed from the side. Coming week I will add some photos to the Artis photo gallery.

Is there any news or speculation on what they are going to do with the building? The building is very special, but without the species that made it special, it makes it less and the building is showing it's age.

From what I heard, they want to either renovated or rebuild the building.
Currently you can by stickers of animals that live in the small mammal house (otter, armadillo and jird), the money goes to renovating the building. There is also a donation point in the small mammal house. So we have to wait till Artis gives us more information.

Several Dutch newspapers are citing a press message sent out by Artis about their chimpansee group.

Artis is looking to move their chimpansee group to a different zoo. A definite decision has not been made yet. The zoo states the chimpansee group needs more space / quality of life than Artis can offer them: being a city zoo, they cannot easily expand the enclosure. Artis states they are taking this step to give the chimps the best quality of life.

A petition has been started by zoo visitors to keep the chimps in Amsterdam. Although Artis has not stated or confirmed which zoo(s) could be the new home for the group, there are speculations about a zoo in India.

I wonder what your opinion is in this debate. I will state my own opinion in my next message, to keep this post purely informative. :)

The move of the whole group to a different zoo has been cancelled due to the health condition of the alpha male. Whether the zoo will expend their enclosure is not yet sure, the zoo is first evaluating the options it has for the group.

Is there room for expending then? I think this the same situations as they had with the lions. I hope they keep the species, because of their history in artis

If money is no limitation, I think they could but it all depends on the plans Artis has.

You could for instance use the space of the adjacent wolf enclosure (currently occupied by 2 wolves) to expend the current outside enclosure and to build a new inside enclosure.
Another plan could be to use the space of the ostrich and vicuna enclosures, to expend the enclosure of the chimpanzees. If you also use the space of the current chimpanzee outside enclosure and the wolf enclosure, you get a lot of room to build a new indoor and outdoor enclosure.
The old inside enclosure could be demolished and that space could be added to the outside enclosure of the gorillas, who also need more space.

However, these are just my opinions, but hopefully Artis decides to invest in a new enclosure.
If so this can take a while given that they are still raising funds for the aquarium and small mammal house.

If the wolf enclosure is to small, i would see that as an option. Really like the enclosure and the species, but would go for the chimps if I had the option

Today I had a quick visit to the zoo, here are some changes that I saw.

- Two out of three enclosures of the European Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) are completely empty, so I persume they will be refurbished.

- The dwarf mongooses now have access to the former meerkat enclosure (both inside and outside). The outside enclosures are connected with a tunnel.

- A sign at the Uilen ruïne / Owl ruin indicated that the snowy owl is currently behind the scenes, the Japanese cranes can still be seen. Today I also noticed a few Little egrets (Egretta garzetta garzetta) in this enclosure.

The ostrich could just be added to the African Savanah if there enclosure was to go.

They used to live in the African Savannah enclosure, so I am not sure what the reason for the move was. Which could mean that they can't be moved back to the Savannah.

there were nilgai and axis deer in those enclosures before, so there must have been a reason to not have ostriches on the savannah anymore. You see that alot of zoos don't keep ostriches on there savannah or in the case of the KMDA do it, stop with the species on the savannah and then several years later try again.

Yesterday I received the latest issue of the Artis magazine.

According to the magazine the European eiders (Somateria mollissima mollissima) left the collection and Green keel-bellied lizards (Gastropholis prasina) arrived at the zoo. So next time I will have a closer look in the reptile house and hopefully I can spot this new species. This also makes Artis the only zoo in The Netherlands with the species (according to ZTL).

For the first time a Sumatran laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor) hatched, not a zoo first breeding but also the Baer’s pochards (Aythya baeri) bred successfully.

Yesterday I went to Artis again and noticed the following:

- The 2 European Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) enclosures are refurbished and probably house the dormice again, given their nocturnal nature.

- The Frill-necked lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) enclosure in the reptile house was empty and the signing was removed. So I persume that the last individual sadly passed away.

- The Speckled cape tortoises (Chersobius signatus) seem to have moved to the nursery part of the reptile house. Their former enclosure next to the Aldabra giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea gigantea) in the Gorilla house, has been empty for a while.

- Lastly, the Dutch polder aviary currently houses no birds. I am not sure what they are going to do there, probably some consctruction/renovation work. I persume that the birds are currently behind the scenes, except for the little egrets, they live in the Uilen ruïne / Owl ruin.

Where abouts are the giant anteaters located within the zoo?
There's also a few reptile listings on zootierliste (Reticulated python, green iguana, Asian water dragon). Are these all behind the scenes or are they on exhibit somewhere, or have left the collection? Are the Gastropholis on display yet?

The Giant anteaters are on the Pampas enclosure, between the Jaguars and the flamingos in the Southwest corner of the zoo. The reptiles you mentioned should all be on-show, they're found in the reptile house, which is above the Pelican and Spider monkey pond, next to the bird house and the forest house in the Northwest corner of the zoo
