Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2023

News from today's visit:

. The Amur Leopard exhibit was blocked off and appeared to have work being done on it. Hopefully they don't put Amur Leopards back into that puny enclosure and are able to find a more suitable replacement.

. The entire left wing of the daylight section in the Mouse House is now one attached enclosure for the zoo's Black & Rufous Elephant Sengis. The Degu and Northern Tree Shrew can still be found in the Children's Zee and Jungleworld respectively.

. The Fat-Tailed Gerbil Exhibit was unsigned and appeared to be vacated from it's exhibit.

. Unfortunately, it appears the zoo has lost their last Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat :(. The signage on their old exhibit in the Mouse House was removed, and the Rat was nowhere to be found.

On an unrelated notes does anyone know if the Emu & Crane yards are still visible around WoB? I wasn't able to find them on my visit today, but it would be useful for future reference!
Looking forward to seeing the photos you took if any!

It’s my understanding that in the AZA you will find pure bred Cubans with hybrids being common in the unaccredited, private sector:
Thank you,I was just wondering because I was watching a episode of the zoo where they were testing the Cuban crocs to see if there were pure but I never saw the answer so I thought I would ask here

does anyone know if the kiwis at the bronx ever bred, and does anyone know if the bactrian deer group had a fawn cause it seems like it.

Two (1.1) Snow Leopard cubs have been born to female Dariga and male Naltar. Naltar’s sire was Leo, a leopard that was imported from Pakistan in 2006 so these births continue a valuable genetic line: Log into Facebook | Facebook

Does anyone know how many snow leopards are currently at the Bronx? I noticed there's not a thread tracking the population in North American zoos, unlike many other animals. It looked like they had a large number rotating on and off exhibit on The Zoo, but wasn't sure if that was still the case.

It says they currently have 10 snow leopards at the end of the post announcing the new cubs :)

Do you have names and genders for them minus the new cubs?
They should have 5.5 individuals at the moment. The 5 males would be Naltar, Mike, Zoya, Hariyo, and the male cub while the 5 females would be Sameera, Khyber, Dariga, Bala, and the female cub.

Is Leo still at the Bronx or has he passed or went elsewhere?
Also to answer your question, Leo passed away at the Bronx Zoo on March 9th, 2021.

Thank you so much, I love that you know practically every animal in every zoo it seems! Love to see that they have an evenly split gender diversity with the snow leopards.

In April the zoo did bring in an additional 1.1 pair of Ring-Tailed Mongoose from Berlin Zoo. Nashville Zoo also imported 3.4 from Europe in the fall of 2022
Glad to hear the planed imports were successful! I wouldn't be surprised if the individuals I saw were the recent imports, as they were both quite active and photogenic. It will be interesting to see if Bronx and Nashville are able to establish this species in North America, or if they are destined to join the long and growing list of dead-end species.
