So it appears that a donor renamed Yasmin to SheRa... oy.

Wait, that's why Yasmin's name is being changed?!?

And here I assumed that Cincinnati had a legitimate reason to change her name (Like say, they already had a well known animal named Yasmin), not that it was up to a donor's sense of whimsy.

I wonder if that same donor is going to insist that this herd be referred to as the "Best Friends Squad" in official zoo press releases and media, lol.

I saw the video on social media this morning of them in their new area in Elephant Trek. I know its probably impossible for us to know, but I wonder if animals like people develop certain accents due to living in certain countries. Perhaps maybe the Dublin cows will sound like they have a bit of an Irish accent to Mai Thai. Wishful thinking but I think that'd be pretty cool if it were true!
It's not country-based, as countries are a human construct, but studies have been done showing cultural transmission in animals, sometimes including differences in vocalization patterns. Since it's well-known vocalizations have a social learning component (at least in many species), it's likely that zoo populations that don't come in contact with each other may show some differences in vocalizations and other culturally-transmitted behaviors.

While I couldn't find any studies on cultural transmission in elephants, here are some good ones related to vocalization being culturally transmittable in other taxa:

Who cares? Zoos change animal's names all the time, and animals don't care what humans call them.

Of course animals don't care what their human-given names are, I'm not upset on Yasmin/SheRa's behalf. Lol.

I'm just annoyed because random name changes can make keeping track of whose who in captive-bred populations needlessly difficult.

If I remember coirrectly isn't Jati a Malaysian and a bit on the smaller side? The Dublin cows should be able to hold their own against her right especially since its 4 (Dublins) against one (Jati)?
That's actually a bit of a shame IMHO, since Schottzie and Yasmin/SheRa are aunt and niece.
Schottzie has never met Yasmin and neither one of them know of their relation so it is not a shame at all. Jati is Malaysian but still bigger then an elephant like Mai Thai and very dominant so she would definitely cause some conflict with the Dublin cows.

Also I'm flying back to Cincy tomorrow and will try to get some photos of the new elephants from the hill across the street if they are outside.

Were you able to get some photos of the new elephants from the hill across the street? The zoo has not posted anything on social media since the videos of the elephants arriving.

I tried seeing if I could spot them from the little part next to the zoo but unfortunately they did not venture outside while I was there. Hopefully we'll get some more updates on them soon!

Some Updates from my recent visits to the zoo:

The sloth habitat in Discovery Forest has once again been expanded along with the tortoise habitat now having permanent features installed.

Free-Flight Aviary species have been moved off-display for the season and which means the Kea are now on-view!

So far this breeding season, 2 Pigeon Guillemot and 1 Common Murre baby have been born.

Some renovations have been done in the Orangutan enclosure and more climbing opportunities have been added.

The former island in Jungle Trails has been completely leveled (Rumors I've heard are it will expanded space for orangutan or bonobo but not sure how reliable those are.)

All warm weather species in Jungle Trails along with other sections have been moved inside/off-display for winter.

Natural substrate is being added to Colobus enclosure in Jungle Trails.

The Pygmy Slow Loris pair have been put together for breeding.

New water features such as sprinklers, jets, and waterfalls have been added to the Hippo Cove.

Bonobo's have been taken off-display for the time being and the zoo has not announced when they will be put back on display.

Lastly, the Festival of Lights begins tonight and boy has the zoo outdone themselves this year!

I believe the zoo only has 2.0 Pigeon Guillemot, what was your source for the chicks?
