North American Masai Giraffe Population

A generic giraffe population thread for North America would be impossible. There are just so many giraffe in so many private facilities with little to no information about them. Even narrowing it down to AZA accredited facilities only would still be quite the feat because the generic population just in the AZA is still substantially larger than the Masai population in total. There's a reason why these population threads tend to focus on taxa with smaller populations that are concentrated in AZA facilities -- they are just easier to keep track of and are more manageable for the people taking them on. Compiling, categorizing, and maintaining all of this information is not an easy feat, even for official studbook keepers let alone lay zoo enthusiasts.

Santa Barbara - 0.1 Adia gave birth to her third calf and first female calf on November 2nd. The sire is 1.0 Michael, as always, who unfortunately passed away earlier this year, this is his last offspring.

Santa Barbara Zoo on Instagram: "Last Thursday there was a BIG event at the Zoo... Adia the Masai giraffe gave birth to a female calf at 3:13 PM! The calf was able to stand after about 23 minutes, then followed her mother around and attempted to nurse within two hours. This is Adia’s third calf and according to Dr. Julie Barnes, the Zoo’s Vice President of Animal Care & Health, she is “once again showing excellent maternal behavior.” At its first medical exam, the calf weighed 69 kg (152 lb.) and measured approximately 6 feet, 1 inch tall. “We are always excited to welcome another calf to our herd, but this one carries extra special significance, as she is the last offspring of our beloved giraffe Michael, who we lost earlier this year,” shared Barnes. “As we witness this calf’s strength and vitality, we are reminded that Michael’s legacy lives on, and our important work surrounding the conservation of this species continues.” Adia and her calf will remain behind the scenes for a short while to get to know each other and bond. No absolute way! Two more zoos with a new baby Masai Giraffes! This HAS to be a record for the most baby Masai giraffes born in the U.S in only a few short months.
