Dierenrijk's two Raccoon dogs have been euthanized. The animals were both very old and have been struggling with multiple health issues.

Dierenrijk will not be getting new Raccoon dogs for the exhibit, instead they're planning on fully redesigning the site of the exhibit
 
30-year-old northern white-cheeked gibbon female Kanette and her 1-year-old young have died. Keepers found Kanette in poor condition yesterday morning. The vet immediately examined her by ultrasound and blood tests. Unfortunately, help came too late and she had died by the afternoon. The cause of death is still under investigation.

The death of the mother would result in the cub becoming isolated and not receiving the warmth, social stimuli and parenting it needs to live a good life. With the welfare of this young animal in mind, it was decided to put it to sleep.

I‘m shocked that they euthanized the1 year old baby- thats not that small anymore and I am sure it had good chances of survival….. avoid handraising is the right principle, but that went too far!
 
The inhabitants of Dierenrijk's elephant enclosure will be behind the scenes for a little while. Dierenrijk will be building a natural-looking rock wall with extra foliage which will serve partially as enrichment for the animals, and as a way for the animals to get out of each others sight. On top of this, this wall is able to be fully closed off to create a separation enclosure if needed.

It is expected to be finished in about a week.

A one week natural rock wall build? That is some rapid works. Sounds almost like they are just gonna pile up natural boulders haha.

Well, the message was shared by Dierenrijk this morning, along with some construction photos. They may have started yesterday or earlier

And yeah, it's probably going to be a relatively simple boulder wall. It's only Libema, after all

I agree, even though handraising has its downsides. yet I do find the vet decision is severely lacking.
 
A chimpanzee was born at Dierenrijk last Tuesday. Mother of the baby is Jana. Unfortunately, the youngster died during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. At the moment, the young is still in the enclosure. Later, the youngster will be examined to find out the cause of death.
 
Dierenrijk has started renovations to the tiger enclosure. The old cheetah enclosure will be added to the current tiger enclosure. This will make the enclosure twice as large. There will also be more water in the enclosure. The work is expected to be completed in May. The pair of Amur tigers from Beekse Bergen will move to Dierenrijk after the renovation has been completed.

This is great news! Dierenrijk is very much a mammal heavy zoo, to the point where it could definitely benefit from building a Reptile House in the future. But, having said that, when I was there in 2019 I was really impressed with the overall quality of the exhibits. From the plans online, the expanded Amur Tiger complex will likely be yet another top-notch addition to this excellent Dutch zoo.
