I have been finding out about yet more facilities that are now closed and so I've updated my list here just for the heck of it. Little Ray's Nature Centre and Border City Petting Zoo (both in Canada) are not surprises, but I was a tad shocked to learn that a Sea Life Aquarium had shut down in Germany. That one stands out as the Sea Life brand seems fairly reputable worldwide.

29 Closed Zoos/Aquariums:

Polar Park (Edmonton, AB, Canada)
Alberta Wildlife Park (Edmonton, AB, Canada)
Little Ray’s Nature Centre & Sloth World (Edmonton, AB, Canada)

No surprise really. Sea Life is a corporate business, and I expect would not hesitate to close a venue if it is not working, just as McDonalds would not hesitate to close a store if it does not work. It speaks to the health of the brand.

I mean, they were cut-throat enough to axe the very first SeaLife site in Oban, UK a few years back after years of neglecting it, withholding funding and not bothering to promote it even within the local area :p so they certainly wouldn't even blink at closing down a random site in Germany!

Announced today that Rhyl(North Wales UK) sealife centre has closed its doors today for the last time.

Rhyl Seaquarium wasn't a Sealife Centre. There had been another Seaquarium in Weston-Super-Mare but that closed a couple of years ago. I guess the closure of Rhyl puts an end to Seaquarium as a business?

Noorder Dierenpark (Emmen, Netherlands)
Vogelpark Utropia (Middelburg, Netherlands)
Het Arsenaal (Middelburg, Netherlands)
Grottenaquarium (Valkenburg, Netherlands)
Reptielenzoo Serpo (Delft, Netherlands) (might re-open at a new location, but that would count as a different zoo imo)

Aquatopia (Antwerp, Belgium)
Vogelpark en Vlindertuin het Zwin (Knokke-Heist, Belgium)

Dusit Zoo (Bangkok, Thailand)

Simón Bolívar Zoo and Botanical Garden (San Jose, Costa Rica)

I think only the World Aquarium in Saint Louis, more specifically the location in the City Museum. I visited in 2012, the aquarium relocated in 2015-16, and then closed for good in 2019

Hello.

1. The zoo at Beto Carrero World - Penha, state of Santa Catarina

That's it.

The SEA Laboratory in Redondo Beach, CA is, I believe, the only permanently closed facility I’ve ever been to. That one was a truly tragic loss for the community and the animals, though I think most found new homes. I went to the first Big Bear Alpine Zoo many times, which technically was closed, but it was of course immediately replaced by a completely new, vastly expanded version under the same management down the street. I actually need to go to that one still haha.

Three zoological facilities I've been to that have closed are:
  • Marineland of the Pacific (fantastic theme park that I liked better than Sea World)
  • Lion Country Safari in Irvine, CA (drive-through animal park)
  • Oregon Undersea Gardens (small aquarium that didn't live up to the hype)

Gator Jungle (near Tampa, FL. now it is "Dinosaur World")
Maine Aquarium (Saco Maine)
Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden & Mirage Aquarium (Las Vegas, NV)
Discovery Island (Disney World, Lake Buena Vista FL.)
Marineland of Florida (technically it is still a marine attraction, but it is not at all the same place that it was in the 1990s)
Pier Aquarium (St. Petersburg Florida USA)
The old Tarpon Springs Aquarium (since moved a few miles down the street into a new facility)

Aquatopia (Antwerp, Belgium)
