Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

the new facility could well be situated at the IZW at the border of the park where they have scientists. (the IZW used to belong to the Tierpark until the Wall went down)

And, of course, the IZW is expanding further into the footprint of the Tierpark itself with the current construction taking place on the site of the former Crocodile House!

That's right. And they also want to cooperate far more closely in general. They even plan a shared science building which is going to be open to the public. The IZW boss once said they have been cooperating with zoos all over Germany and the globe but the former Tierpark administration wasn't keen on any cooperations with their neighbour and former daughter institution. So they were quite happy, when the new administration sent them different signals...

I have known about this project for a while. San Diego WAP already has an outstation for NWR with Southern white rhino surrogate mothers. Same might happen at IZW ..., I do hope behind the scenes.

Honestly, I would rather hope they do invest in new on exhibit accomodation for black rhinos with which the Berlin Zoo has been effectively the studbook keeper (as well).

Of course the San Diego zoo has its famous sperm bank..

To get back for reality - is the only species confirmed for the new pachyderm house elephants? Presumably African? I can’t believe the Tierpark would be left without rhinos after this project is completed..

Well, there won't be any other large mammals in the building. This is what has been found in documents so far (but never officially confirmed for as far as I'm aware of):

- African Elephant (new*)
- Honey Badger
- Yellow-Spotted Rock-Hyrax
- Common Gundi (new)
- Elephant Shrew (new, with pancake tortoise))

- Village Weaver

- Aldabra Giant Tortoise
- Pancake Tortoise (with elephant-shrews)
- Spider Tortoise (with giant chameleons)
- Malagasy Giant Chameleon (new, with spider tortoises)
- Angola Python (new)
- Red Spitting Cobra (new)
- Cape Cobra (new)
- Eastern Gaboon Viper (new)
- Rhinoceros Viper (new)

*i.e. presently not listed in Zootierliste/ presumably not in the park yet
(of course, at least in case of the African Elephants this isn't a matter of doubt/speculation)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are however confirmed plans to have African Lions and Rhinos in the park again as well - at different spots of the Africa zone (by the way: the name "meerkat" also has been spotted on maps in some documents, but I doubt this is thrilling news for any zoonerds on here).

This other stuff may take some time, though. And in the case of the rhinos this may or may not overlap with the breeding station. I can't quite imagine how they would have two complexes for African Rhinos, but I also cannot see how they would try breeding Northern White Rhinos inside Southern White Rhinos right in front of the eye of the public. So I'm really curious what is behind this.

True the Pachyderm aka new Elephant Building has an emphasis on smaller African mammals, Afrotheria and reptiles (my Joy ...., hopefully also some bird species for the hall ...).

If you can find out at what time the planning for the new black rhino exhiibit will be sited. I expect the IZW work to happen behind the scenes ...

I also found two small videos about this project taken at the IZW campus as well as in central Africa:

I wonder, when there will be news about the project planned in the Tierpark.

@Kifaru Bwana I honestly have no idea, where in the park they plan this breeding station. But I'm sure, they would protect the young rhinos really well. Having said that, I really would love to see some living rhinos in the park again. It has been far too long now.
There are several European zoos earmarked for participation in the NWR project and provide SWR cows for being foster surrogate mothering.

The venomous snake collection is a very good addition, these animals are too rare in European generalist zoos.

According to a recent Instagram post of Tierpark Berlin male Goodfellow's Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus goodfellowi buergersi) Jeffrey (*2019) arrived from Zoo Belfast. However, according to ZTL he had been living in Tierpark Berlin since 2021.

The animal arriving in 2021 was his (half?)-brother, who passed away in 2022.

I'm definitely looking forward to having some more venomous snakes in the park.

At the same time, I'm a bit sad they don't plan with Black Mambas again. The mambas always were among my favourite snakes in the old snake farm and the black one even is a Savannah species. But I was told, they aren't popular zoo animals any longer, as most zoos aren't really looking for high maintenance species these days. In Zootierliste, it mainly lists black mambas in specialized institutions with some exceptions in Eastern European countries.

Does anyone know more or less when they plan to inaugurate the new facility for babirusas, crested black macaques and otters?

It seems that its construction was very advanced but there has been no news for quite some time

They don't often give out official schedules, especially once there is some delay. This project actually was scheduled for Summer 2023 and then there never was an official update again. But the guy in at the souvenir shop of the Tierpark supporters (the small cabin/stall close to the main restaurant) got bombarded with questions and so he finally asked officials and was told to say "likely Spring 2024"...

I don't know, if this is a reliable information (if anyone should plan their visit around this). But it would make a lot of sense to present this exhibit at the launch of the new season.
