Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2023

@Van Beal The Mayan Temple and the Kids Zoo are closed for the season, the babirusa, giraffes, penguins, Aldabra tortoises and Americas monkeys are inside only, and the Savanna birds are done for the year. I think the river hippos are done for the year as well but I'm not 100% sure about that. The other Savanna stuff that go in for the winter like the white rhinos and zebras are still out. Not sure if the roos are still out but I'd be surprised if they weren't. The ostriches won't be out due to avian flu (zebra Jake is in their exhibit though) and the website says the white lions are off likely due to one of the girls taking a fall today so you might not see them

Hope that helps and that you enjoy your visit!

All you said was off, though the white rhinos and warthogs were as well, which I found surprising. Wishing I’d read this earlier as I missed the giraffes (the sign on the door made me think they weren’t anywhere to be found). Other than that I didn’t miss anything. Monocled Cobra was off again, and the Ratsnakes were being moved to the Indo-Malaya Pavilion, and the juvenile Banded Iguanas were in the old Ratsnake tank.
Also didn’t realize what had been in the enclosure across from the alligators in the Americas Pavilion (it was the wood turtle) and saw the tomistoma and tentacled snakes this time as well, having missed them on my last trip.

@Van Beal The rhinos being off is a little strange considering the zebras are still out. One possibility is that they're getting ready for Sabi to give birth considering she's a touch overdue now. If that was the case though they could've sent Tom out instead of the girls. Maybe I'm overthinking it and it's just the weather.

The cobra was out yesterday, weird he wasn't today

Everyone should remember this time of year some of the animals are already completely off display like the savanna birds but others like the rhinos are given free choice. The rhinos being off exhibit might simply mean that whoever was slated to be outside had the option but when you were by had chosen to be in the barn or at least up close to it. As long as the weather is above a species threshold for being outside and they shift easily enough (the savanna birds wont so thats why they are caught up at the same time every year) then keepers will give them the choice to be outside. Its about letting them have options. Late fall or early spring visits are always a roll of the dice as to who is out and about far more than any other time of the year. Part of the fun of going this time of year is the mystery.

Grizzly bear Shintay is officially in hibernation, so the Canadian Domain will likely close for the season soon

@Cowdoy1010 Whoa what the heck? This is awesome, well done on catching that. The post is tagged Toronto Zoo and judging by his other recent posts Dolf doesn't seem to be on vacation so yeah, I guess this is legit. Caption says it's in for a healthcare check so I guess it just arrived and is undergoing quarantine. I'm no armadillo expert so I could be wrong about this but it looks like a six-banded to me. Definitely a male judging from some of the pics lol

An armadillo being added to Americas was mentioned in the Animal Plan from 2020, so I guess they've gone through with that plan. As far as I know this is Toronto's first armadillo, so this is very exciting. Now the question is if it is going into Americas what exhibit will it go into? Maybe it'll share space with the banded shrike since that exhibit is pretty big for such a little bird.

Hopefully we'll get an official announcement in the coming days so we can learn the little fella's name.

So, I looked at the post here. There is 5-6 photos and it does appear to be the Toronto Zoo. He also said in his caption "Healthcare check for this nugget @thetorontozoo"

VERY EXCITING!!!

@Cowdoy1010 Yep upon further inspection that's definitely the health centre. Man this is super exciting, feels like it's been ages since we got a major new species. Last one was what, the sea eagles back in 2014? Here's hoping this little guy makes it to his new home safe and sound, I'll definitely be making a trip to see him whenever he goes on display

Did the zoo get an armadillo? Dolf posted this on Instagram.
Great there is a new species to the zoo. Hope they add more fantastic animals or bring the animals back like the gaur etc.
A question:Why did the zoo get rid of the gaur, there have been some birth?

@Zoo adventures The gaur didn't have an SSP, and they were also sitting on prime real estate that the zoo had earmarked for the outdoor orang exhibit. I think their small winter home also shared some of the blame but I'm not sure on that one. I don't think there's much interest (or space) to have them back so you're out of luck on that one

Do you know the name of the individual of Gaur in Toronto zoo before. I read that they went to Park Safari

@Zoo adventures The only ones I remember are Flower the Gaur and her mate Hercules. If you dig into some Parc stuff you might be able to track down the names of some of their calves

Umm... you can go back and look in the names thread, both the active one and the old one for names... but what do I remember? Our breeding male was Hercules. Her mate was Flower. There second last calf was a male named Forrest. His baby sister and the last calf born at the zoo was Wilma. The zoo had 13 calves born there. Couldnt tell you another name if my life depended on it.

Thank you for the name, the Toronto zoo has quite a very successful calves born at the zoo. I will try to find the names.
Edit: Another question. I read in Wikipedia of Toronto zoo. Why did the zoo get rid of koalas(1988, 1996, 2002), and the golden monkeys(1986).
Also are Clouded leopard on exhibit?.
