It’s that time again. As another year beings to come to a close it is time for the 7th annual ZooChat Thread of the Year completion. 2022 saw the creation of some truly inspiring threads and it looks like the momentum has carried into this year. I'd argue even more high quality content has been produced as of late which should hopefully make this an interesting nomination process, especially after last year which was easily the most predicable outcome in the history of the game. If you've participated in the past you should know how this works, although one change is that I did extend the eligibility period for nominees at the request of other users. The rules are simple:

1.) Down below, please post the titles of exactly three threads (and the users that created them) that you think deserve to be considered for thread of the year. Any type of thread is eligible for nomination: news, discussion, travel, lists, history, speculative design, etc. It just has to have been created between December 15th, 2022 and December 15th, 2023.

2.) You cannot submit your own thread to be nominated. However, if your thread is within the top contenders you are permitted to vote for it if you wish.

3.) When the nominations have concluded, the top five threads that received the most nominations will be entered into a poll. In the event two or more threads tie for the fifth most nominations, both threads will be included in the final poll.

4.) Absolutely no privately soliciting votes under any circumstances. If you are reported doing so, it will result in your nominations being disregarded and your thread becoming ineligible for nomination. Repeat offenders will be banned from participation in the future. However, you can campaign publicly for any thread you think deserves to be given a nomination if you’d like.

The nomination period will end on December 15th at 11:59 PM Chicago time. From there a separate thread will be created to vote for the winner between the selected finalists. Whatever thread has the most votes at 11:59 PM Chicago time on December 31st will win the coveted title of 2023 ZooChat Thread of the Year and all the online brownie points that come with it. Feel free to ask for any further clarifications if needed and send in your selections. Best of luck! :)

I've been keeping a little list of threads through the year which I thought might be worthy of consideration, although some petered out and didn't go anywhere. I think I can easily predict the top four threads which will be chosen by most people.

However, I'll nominate these three:

American Herping: A Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians in US Zoos by @Coelacanth18

Trends in European zoo collections in the 21st century by @lintworm

And then MRJ Does Uganda - a travel blog by @MRJ because there were precious few trip threads this year. (although being started on 18 December it only just snuck into the time-frame).

Very little trip threads indeed. Here is my top-3

Bull Sharks, Bongos and Booroolong Frogs, Oh My!: WhistlingKite24 tours Sydney’s zoos by @WhistlingKite24 - My favourite travel thread of the year, but not much competition, though there is another @snowleopard episode in the running too

American Herping: A Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians in US Zoos @Coelacanth18 - A well researched and interesting read one of multiple US contestants this year.

Zoochat Big Year 2023 by @Chlidonias - the 11th edition of what is probably one of the most important threads for the Zoochat Community. I think that success is worth celebrating.

This thread by @pachyderm pro with 100 "must-see exhibits" was a beauty:

America's 100 Must See Exhibits

I really enjoy reading travel threads with zoo reviews within them, and @WhistlingKite24 did a wonderful job in his Aussie zoo thread:

Bull Sharks, Bongos and Booroolong Frogs, Oh My!: WhistlingKite24 tours Sydney’s zoos

For a third choice, there were several options and I respect the huge amount of work that has gone into various other threads. I'll go with this one, from @Neil chace as it's been a delight to follow along with his choices:

Popular Zoo Mammals and Their Best Exhibits

When I said you can only make three nominations, I didn't just mean three at a time. ;) You'll have to pick just three of the six threads you chose if you want your picks to be counted.
Would it be allowed to give each of the six threads a "half-nomination" (worth half of a vote each)?

No can do. Nominating a thread becomes less thoughtful when you can do so many and it opens the door to modifying votes in other ways that wouldn't be healthy to the game - what happens if someone wants to nominate 12 threads worth a quarter point each? :p

Okay then now I'll keep these three:
Chlidonias versus Vanuatu by @Chlidonias
Trends in European zoo collections in the 21st century by @lintworm
American Herping: A Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians in US Zoos by @Coelacanth18
