Burgers' Zoo Burgers' Zoo news 2023

Some additions and removals from BZ:

The Northern cardinals are now fully behind the scenes (or out of the collection)

The Rose-bellied buntings from the desert have moved into the canyon aviary

Blue tang surgeonfish are back in the Mangrove

The Caiman in the Bush was moved behind the scenes, according to a keeper this was done for an indefinite amount of time, but seeing that all signage has been removed and they removed the caiman from the wayfinding signs (is that what you call them?) we can safely assume she won't be returning any time soon.

Judging by the fact that she's behind the scenes and not being moved to another zoo, we can also assume we won't be getting a new species here for the foreseeable future...

The sea nettles and their signage are also gone from the ocean

Adding to that, the caiman has indisputably been quite elusive behind the scenes ever since it departed to the caiman-heaven roughly a month ago. I can't help but wonder if there will be anything to fill its shoes.

Wait, it died? I asked if it had died or moved to another zoo and the keeper mentioned that it was neither and she moved behind the scenes...

Where are the stable sections of the Safari, as on my visit in August last year, I saw no evidence of an indoor area, and am starting to wonder how I managed to miss it!

The stables are not accessible when the animals are out. The zebra & antelope stables are on the pathway between the ocean exit and the path going up to the safari restaurant. The giraffe stables are at the other end of the Bush next to the unsigned Asian turtles next to the only conifer in the Bush.

Now that it's colder, there's a higher chance of the stables being open and the animals being inside

Spoke to 2 keepers today:

The Lyle's fruit bat has been rediscovered in the Bush. It was first thought that these had died but there were still two left. However, since being discovered one already died and the other is very old so it's not expected these will make it for much longer.

The Curassows have also moved out of the Bush. From the beginning these were quite bold, which grew into stealing things from baby strollers and now they started attacking people and keepers/guides so they were taken out of the Bush.

In the Leafcutter and colony, a lot of Alates started flying out so they had to shut the colony off from outside, to avoid new colonies forming in the Bush. A group of the ants were still outside and are now cut off from the colony and the fungus they eat so it is uncertain how long these will survive.

BZ will wait until there have been no Alates for at least a week before they re-open the colony to their open air exhibit.

Other news:
A few Yellow-spotted Amazon river turtles have moved into the old caiman enclosure.

Two large palm trees were cut down in the Desert and were being torn apart by the peccaries.

Finally, the Sun bear enclosure has been partially rebuilt, now with a much larger climbing frame for the Binturongs:

As you can see, the loose rocks have also been removed from the Sun bear habitat, but I assume these will be added back eventually.

Glad they also noticed after all these years :p. I saw them from time to time, which is why they are still on Zootierliste and I posted about them here too some time ago.

Blue tang surgeonfish are back in the Mangrove

The single remaining individual has been back for a while, but has gotten company from at least 1 new (and still very small) surgeonfish.

The Rose-bellied buntings from the desert have moved into the canyon aviary

rose-bellied bunting signage was also removed from the Bush (and replaced by superb fruit dove, which have been in the caiman area for many months already). There is only a single male rose-bellied bunting remaining and a few females. There is still some breeding going on, so it seems like they are concentrating all their efforts in one place. But the number of individuals is greatly reduced compared to a few years ago.

BZ will wait until there have been no Alates for at least a week before they re-open the colony to their open air exhibit.

The ants had access to their outdoor exhibit again yesterday.

The pipefish are also back on exhibit in the Ocean.

In the Rimba I only saw the 2 adult females of the sun bears, no sign of the young. The outdoor enclosure was inhabited by a film crew. I also saw only 3 siamang, seemed like the female from the main pair was missing.

The golden-bellied mangabey are still in the leopard separation cage, I wonder if they will ever go back on exhibit...

The male aardvark has also returned from his short stay in Cologne where it is hoped he impregnated the females.

Why no longer mixed with the Gorillas? Was there trouble?

The official story earlier this year was that they were temporarily relocated to make some adjustments to the indoor housing of the gorillas, with all the young males still in the group that was apparently necessary (their transport to China seriously delayed or maybe cancelled altogether by now). I have never heard anything about real conflict with the gorillas, the enclosure was set up in such a way that there was plenty of mangabey-only space which was easily reached, so this enclosure didn't suffer from the weaknesses of exhibits were monkeys were killed by a gorilla such as Pairi Daiza.

Given that they aren't an EEP species anymore, I do however doubt there is any long-term space for them in the zoo, I sincerely hope that they will be replaced by another mangabey or guenon, but with the current management less species seems more even if space is not the problem. So who knows...

Thanks for the update and explanation..

I really hope they continue with the mangabeys, they are stunning animals!
Is there any information about when the new elephants from Belfast will arrive?

The transfer of the elephants isn't confirmed and apparently the news articles were somewhat optimistic with regards to that this transfer was really planned. Even if it is in the works it will likely take a lot of time with all the import paperwork...
