Chapultepec Zoo Chapultepec Zoo news

I really liked the zoo! It was more beautiful than I expected. Mostly very nice enclosures, great collection.

I visited on a sunday, so no entrance fee (expect for the herpetario and insectario), but that also meant it was very, very crowded at some parts of the zoo.

I was able to add several new (sub)species to my mammal list (volcano rabbit, red brocket deer, Mexican black howler, Mexican prairie dog, Mexican wolf).

Unfortunately, about half of the bird section was closed (Montezuma aviary and aviaries with the birds of prey). However, I had some luck, as the first aviary after the road block was that of the Californian condors and one was sitting high in the aviary. So I got a distant view of it and could add the Californian condor to my zoo list of birds of prey!
Do you know why the aviaries were closed? Bird flu?

Glad you had a great visit to Chapultepec zoo. The Moctezuma aviary is closed because of avian flu. The raptor section is closed because the California condors are breeding and raising chicks. Did you see the new amphibians and wetland center ?

Sadly the aviaries were in a similar state when I visited in October. Do any of our Mexican friends know what’s going on there?

I believe the zoo is free everyday, apart from the small fee for the areas mentioned above. I visited on a Thursday last year and was also pleasantly surprised by the free entry.

Yes, but it was a bit disappointing. Only certain people were admitted at a time, so there was quite a waiting line on this busy day. It was signed as an amphibian center, but only axolotls (it was interesting to see so many species of axolotl) on display. Maybe other species are kept on the upper floor, but that floor was closed.

What species are held in the Moctezuma aviary?

Gana SEDEMA dos premios por trabajo realizado en Centro de Conservación de la Fauna Silvestre de Chapultepec

Chapultepec zoo won two awards this year (2023) from AZCARM (Asociación de Zoologicos, Criaderos y Acuarios de Mexico). One for best new exhibit for Amphibium - the axolotl and wetlands center. The other is for best native species breeding program for the California Condor. The best breding program for a non native species breeding program went to Guadalajara zoo for Adelie penguins.

Glad you enjoyed my home zoo. That exhibit next to the cottontop tamarins used to hold golden headed lion tamarins, which went to san juan de aragon zoo and were replaced by a recently confiscated marmoset species, which was unsigned on my last visit. Chapultepec recieves many confiscated animals from the Profepa (mexican enviromental agency).

Thanks. I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's one of the best zoos I visited in terms of layout, collections and exhibits. And the weather was amazing too. I'm not allowed to go inside aviary though, due to my backpack. The exhibit next to Cottontop Tamarin currently has macaques in it, but I am not sure what species.

At least it was open - when I visited the entire section was shut off!

The peacocks are in the large enclosure where Bantu the gorilla lived. This space could be better used for another rarer animal. Chapultepec no longer has African painted dog, that Enclosure now holds the brown hyenas. I recently saw a African painted dog at Guadalajara zoo. This species is quite rare in Mexican zoos.

Actually Chapultepec zoo will soon be opening a nocturnal house, so cacomixtle are quite possible. Cacomixtle are quite common in natural areas near Mexico City.

What is known about said nocturnal house? Amazing to read of a new one opening, even more in a zoo like Chapultepec!
