Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

Phoebe is the zoo's younger female asian elephant who is currently pregnant and due any day now.

Also....Phoebe came to the Columbus Zoo from African Lion Safari in Ontario where her first calf, George, was born. Phoebe was originally born at Ramat Gan, Israel.

Lastly, our zoo is a little over 600 acres. The actual zoo sits on about 50 (minus the water park, golf course, and parking lot).

NEW IDEA: If we moved the parking lot over to the golf course, which may as well close down, we could develop the twenty acres our parking lot currently wastes and just tram people over Powell Rd. Just random thinking!

I have heard so many good things about the zoo. To be honsest the website puts up that thaught that the zoo is huge! I would love to see if one day. Anyone have any new pictures of the polar frontier or any news about the other future projects?

While talking about polar frontier I know during the summer at the Columbus Dispatch kiosk there was a picture of the Polar Frontier masterplan. On it was an exhibit for Dall Sheep and Reindeer. I know it was mentioned earlier that at the moment the only animals that will open with Polar Froniter will be artic foxes, brown bears, and polar bears but I just wondered what happen to the dall sheep in the plan? Were they just an idea that was thrown near the beginning of the planning process?

I will have the latest Polar Frontier pictures up on Saturday. I'll know all the most current news on projects on Saturday as well, so just wait till then and check out this thread.

@OhioZoos - the Dall Sheep and Caribou were taken out of the Polar Frontier plans months ago, I think because they aren't an appealing species for visitors (I dont know the "real" reason). The image you saw was very out of date. The only species will be Polar Bears, Kodiaks, and Arctic Fox. However, like I have said before, there is plenty of room and money to add stuff later. Right now, our objective is to get it done!!

Also construction is ahead of schedule - thank you weather!! Look for the pictures on Saturday, you will be very impressed on how far we've come in a month!

A tiny complaint

I have a tiny complaint about my beloved zoo - not enough seating. I would like a bench by the river otters and also Brutus and Buckeye. These are two of my favorite exhibits to spend time at and I'd like to park it. :) There are scattered benches but never in front of the animals I like to watch. What's up with that? :)

I'm glad they put a nice bench in front of the tigers for me (with a heat lamp overhead since I tend to track out there in the winter...). Now, if they could ban strollers from the building, I'd be happy. :D

We have debating this idea for a few years. Once African Savannah opens up I think we will build it. Some might consider this "Disneyfication" I really dont think this qualifies and I think the hotel is nothing but a fantastic idea. Also - the nearest hotel currently is over five miles away.

Here's another way of looking at it: Even IF this is "Disneyfication", think of that as a GOOD thing, not bad! Almost everything that Disney has done (including the Animal Kingdom) has been great, so if Columbus is getting a version of Disney in their backyard, you are blessed!

The hotel sounds like a fantastic idea! Are you guys planning on having anything animal related in the hotel to keep it a obvious part of the zoo? I always enjoy the naked mole rat enclosures that seem to be built into the walls, would you guys do something like this in the lobby of the hotel or have any birds or such there?

Its would be awesome if it was connected to the Africann Savannah Exhibit os you could watch then animals from your balcony (Much like the Animal Kingdom Lodge)

Also, I was wondering if you could write up a species list for the future South American Jungle section much like you did for the African Savanna one

While this could change, the current plan for the hotel is to built it adjacent to hoovestock yards in African Savannah and have the entire hotel Safari themed.

Animals that I have heard will be part of South/Central America are as follows: however as a very "far away" project this exhibit's species list will probably change a lot - for better or for worse.
- Jaguar
- Spectacled Bear
- Guanaco
- Rhea
- Giant Anteater
- Tapir (Probably Brazilian)
- Capybara
- Ocelot
- Sloth
- Monkeys (Up to Ten Species)
- Birds (Mostly Macaws)
- Harpy Eagle
- Reptiles (Anaconda, Pythons, ect)
- Fish (Giant River Tank)
- I have also heard Maned Wolves and Margay

Sounds really good, I hope they include Giant Otter

Anyone have any new pictures in the gallery of the polar frontier exhibits? or any new information?

Polar Frontier is coming along quite nicely - most of the foundation is done and we are being work on the "mock rock" - specifically in the Brown Bear exhibit. I'll post some pictures in the next two weeks - just watch the gallery and I'll post in the thread when there are new pictures.

Couple of questions to those who have visited the Columbus Zoo recently:

-Can I pay for parking at the admissions booth or do I pay when I pull into the parking lot?
-Can anyone think of exhibits entirely of mesh wiring around it? I have my sister's nice camera for the trip and I wanted to know of exhibits ahead of time where I had to focus my time on to eliminate wiring in front of the animals.

Thanks!

You'll pay parking as you pull into the lot, before admission.

As for mesh, the lion exhibit has some (but there are viewings without it), the gibbons (though there is also outside viewing if they're up for it), and some of the North American exhibits (I think). Not too much mesh, I must say.
