Australasian Common Chimpanzee Population

Chima’s death was so tragic, especially considering how genetically valuable she was. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it would have been great to have seen Chima (1994) and Keza (1998) transferred to Hamilton Zoo together (Keza had a surprise pregnancy is 2014, preventing her transfer). They would have provided invaluable support to each other and Hamilton Zoo could have potentially had three breeding females.

The Taronga introductions were interesting to read about at the time. They introductions started with the introduction of alpha male (Lubutu) and beta male (Samaki) to the three new females (Ceres, Naomi and Hannah). The 2.3 ratio meant neither side was disadvantaged in numbers and by all reports, was a success.

Unfortunately, introductions to the wider community were more challenging. Koko in particular demonstrated persistent aggression to the new females according to reports on here and Ceres and Hannah struggled to assimilate. Due to her personality (and possibly age), the integration of Naomi went a lot smoother. She’s thriving in Taronga’s community and could well become the alpha female one day.

Yes, definitely, Chima's death was tragic in more ways than one. And I foresee Hamilton waiting until Kendi is old enough before they send Chiku anywhere, and then they can go together. This of course depends on a lot of factors, such as if Sanda gives birth to another infant.

I’m keeping everything crossed for a happy outcome. Hopeful that in a scenario where Lani might reject an infant, either Zombi or Galatea would be able to take it on as a surrogate.

Socially, both are well placed, but neither are lactating (with Zola being four years old and weaned), so would be dependent on them being training to approach the bars for supplementary feeding. Zombi adopting Boon after Soona’s passing seemed more inevitable given the strong bond between the females and Zombi’s maternal state (heavily pregnant).

Oh yes, that was what I meant.

Pregnancy Announcement - Monarto Safari Park

As reported by @Tigergal in the Monarto Safari Park news thread, Lani (2002) is pregnant. This will be Lani’s second infant, following the loss of a daughter in 2017. The sire of the infant is either Sandali (1996) or Enzi (2015).
Great news!

This birth will be very beneficial to Lani's social standing within the current troop. Keepers at Monarto have been wanting to get her pregnant for a while now as she has the perfect skills to be a mother and has been a great aunt to the other young chimps. Awesome to see she's been presented with this opportunity for the first time at Monarto.

Enzi and Lani have always had quite a close relationship, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was indeed the father. Sandali's her uncle so genetically Enzi would be a better match anyway!

Monarto usually announce pregnancies around four to five months before the birth, so I think we can expect to see Hannah give birth sometime April/May of next year.

Enzi siring this infant would like Lubutu siring Samaki under the reign of the then alpha male (Gombe) be a case of foreshadowing what will likely be his role of alpha, where he will have the opportunity to sire many infants down the track. He’s the youngest male by 19 years and the eldest by 7. Combined with Zombi’s standing and he’s a shoe in.

While Lani observed the raising of several infants at Taronga, she was by all accounts aloof from social interactions, only showing a brief fascination with Fumo in 2014. I hope she’s learned some maternal skills from Monarto’s smaller, but close knit troop.

Since Happy’s birth, Lani has been exceptionally close to Hope, acting as a doting aunt figure. I think I’ve actually seen Hope clinging to her more than her mother recently! I’m optimistic that being well settled will help her be successful this time.
The announcement said second quarter of 2024, so I’m guessing April/May is accurate.

If the infant is due in March or early April, visual confirmation should be possible by now if Taronga’s community are anything to go by; though it would have been possible to confirm the pregnancy via testing earlier on in the pregnancy.

Monarto Safari Park should be really proud of what they’ve achieved with their troop. The successful integration of multiple adult males was a regional first and the females clearly have good relationships with each other, despite the four adults originating from three different natal troops. Especially prior to Tsotsi’s passing, they were a genetically diverse troop compared to Taronga and Wellington’s troops.

Common Chimpanzee Population Wrap Up (2023)

2023:

It’s been an uneventful year for New Zealand’s two holders - with no births, deaths or transfers to report for Hamilton Zoo and Wellington Zoo in 2023.

Monarto Safari Park suffered the loss of their alpha male, Tsotsi in June. He’s survived by his daughter, Hope; with paternity tests pending on a juvenile and an infant. Despite his background of being raised in a small troop, with no adult male from the age of five, Tsotsi proved a remarkable alpha and was much respected by the troop; as well as all who knew him.

Taronga Zoo were similarly devastated by the loss of Cebele in July. Cebele was just seven years old and whether she remaining at Taronga in support of her mother, Ceres; or transferred out at adolescence, it was clear Cebele would have been of great value to the region. Good news came in the form of successful infants to Lisa, who gave birth to Lemba on May 23; and Ceres, who gave birth to Cekiri on July 29. Both infants are female and are welcome additions to the regional population.

One of Sydney Zoo’s males, Maike, died in May. The troop was further reduced to 4.4 individuals following the transfer of Jerry to Rockhampton Zoo.

There was drama at Rockhampton Zoo after their juvenile male, Gandali, was bitten by a snake. Fortunately due to the swift actions of the staff, he made a full recovery. They welcomed a castrated male named Jerry from Sydney Zoo, who they plan to fully integrate into their troop over time. He’s so far been integrated with Cassius, the eldest male.

2024:

Kamili at Taronga Zoo is pregnant and due in January 2024.

Lani at Monarto Safari Park is pregnant due around April 2024.

Keza at Wellington Zoo is off contraception and will hopefully give birth to an infant in 2024.

I will post an updated population list for Common chimpanzee in 2024.

I will post an updated population list for Common chimpanzee in 2024.

@Zoofan15 - thanks for this comprehensive round-up! Tsotsi was indeed a sad loss to the Australasian chimpanzee population, although fortunately his family line is also still represented at Hamilton Zoo through his older sister Sanda and her two daughters, Chiku and Kendi. I've spoken with an Australian friend who also agrees with my opinion that Zola of Monarto bears a strong resemblance to that line - I think she looks very like a young Chiku - and I strongly suspect that at least she was sired by Tsotsi.

No worries, stay tuned for an updated population list, which will feature revised sires of sone of Taronga’s females (as per the discovery of a research paper on paternity)!

I think we’ll all be amazed if Zola comes back as anything but Tsotsi’s daughter! The resemblance to his family is very obvious.

Monarto have apparently requested to keep Zuri, but it makes so much more sense to transfer her out and retain Zola instead. Zuri is 11 years old now and four years away from the observed regional breeding age of mid-teens for females chimpanzees. Her only options for breeding are her father and brother. Assuming Zola is Tsotsi’s daughter, her options are: Sandali (unrelated), Enzi (half-brother) and Happy (either unrelated or half-brother).

Like Zola, Hope is an obvious choice to retain. She’s unrelated to Enzi, who we can say with near certainty will be the alpha male by the time she’s in her mid-teens and therefore best placed to sire her infants.

@Zoofan15 - thanks, I'll be interested to see that list! Zuri is well-beloved by zoo staff and visitors (I foresee Auckland Zoo possibly requesting to retain young male Bornean orangutan Bahmi for similar reasons) but I can see the advantages of retaining Zola and Hope instead. Unless the intention of Monarto is to import new males.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Monarto’s troop develops over the next 10-15 years. The great unknown is whether Galatea will ever produce a surviving infant, but they have enough of a female base to develop a community around Zombi, Hannah and their daughters; as well as any female offspring Lani may produce.

While it had been my assumption Monarto would follow the female dispersal pattern (with Enzi and Happy remaining in the troop for life); circumstances may allow them the opportunity to bring in new males under this scenario:

A successful integration of Alon (intact male) and Jerry (neutered male) at Rockhampton would give confidence a similar introduction could be accomplished between Enzi and Happy to Sydney’s neutered males. This would require the passing of their 41 year old intact male and the maturation of Happy to at least seven/eight years.

Depending on how long Boyd (1978), Gombe (1993) and Sandali (1996) live for could potentially allow new males to be brought in a decade or so from now. This would allow the current/expected infants to mature and tie in with the female juveniles reaching reccomended reproductive age.

If Monarto decide to retain Zuri and disperse Zola and possibly Hope, importing new males would be the most logical step to take, and it would be interesting to see how that plays out. Perhaps Monarto are taking the successful Rockhampton integrations into account.

The successful integration of a neutered male to an intact male at Rockhampton could certainly prove a game-changer for future planning. While Monarto should be proud of successfully integrating four adult males from three troops, it should be noted this was achieved without females on site, which won’t be possible going forward.

I really feel like a great opportunity was missed when Sydney Zoo were looking to establish a troop. The opportunity to establish a bachelor troop (or split off troop) from Taronga’s community is one that’s been discussed before: but the import of multiple mother raised males and females from Europe could have allowed the establishment of a thriving troop that could be contribute surplus adolescent females to the region.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out re the Australasian chimps, and what role NZ's chimpanzee troops might play in all of this, if any.
