Fantastic news. Fingers crossed she accepts this infant and has benefited from observing Zombi and Hannah with their respective infants these past few years.
I’ll be fascinated to see who the sire is. Lani was reportedly being followed closely by Enzi (2015) when she was cycling a few months ago; so while Sandali (1996) is the obvious candidate, we can’t rule out his adolescent son. If so, Enzi would be the youngest sire in the region depending on the due date (Lubutu being the record holder at eight years and five months).

Yes they are. Lani is a Common chimpanzee born 2002 at Taronga Zoo. She’s one of 12 chimpanzees at Monarto.
As a side note, this will be Monarto’s eighth chimpanzee infant:

The four lion cubs (one male, three females) born to mum, Husani, have now ventured out on display.

"Husani is a fantastic mum, she’s very relaxed and lets the cubs do their own thing while always keeping a protective eye on them to make sure they’re not getting up to too much mischief. The little boy is very chilled while the three girls are feisty and have a lot of attitude!"

- Mshindi (meaning champion in Swahili)
- Bahati (meaning lucky in Swahili)
- Lela (meaning dark beauty in Swahili)
- Chakula (meaning food in Swahili)
- Kadija (meaning respected/trustworthy in Swahili)
- Nombela (meaning climb in Zulu)
My picks would be:
For the males:
Chakula - it sounds nice and references male lions being male lions.
For the females:
Lela - reflects how many of the lionesses in Monarto’s pride have dark honey coloured coats.
Kadija - an original name that sounds nice.
Nombela - a good meaning and a unique name within the region.
Tbh happy with anything but Bahati, which is almost in the same league as Zuri, Malika and Jabari (i.e. overused).
While it doesn't really matter I suppose, I hope that the shortlist was put together before the names of the Dubbo cubs were announced. It would be preferred if there weren't two Bahatis born in close proximity to each other.
Even if it was, it would be nice if Monarto had scrapped ‘Bahati’ and replaced it with another option for the reason you mention. While I appreciate they have other identifiers (within ZIMS etc), they’re a long lived, high profile species that visitors form an association with. In any case, it’s not like there’s a shortage of African names when you consider place names, lakes and rivers are options; as well as names in Swahili and Zulu.
Maya giving birth to ‘Uzuri’ at Dubbo; and then ‘Zuri’ at Taronga surely takes the biscuit though, especially when the former was shortened to ‘Zuri’.
