Sharks. I found fifty species in three countries. Caveats and technical information in spoilers below.

1) Aquarium websites are generally terrible. As a result I sometimes had to rely on reviews and social media posts from the general public. I probably undercounted the carpet sharks as a result. Some information is inevitably outdated.

2) I included behind the scenes species but didn't necessarily mark them. The most notable case on this list is the short-tailed nurse sharks at Tennessee.

3) I know about the nurse shark species split but pretended I didn't for this post. If you know for sure an aquarium has Pacific nurse sharks, please tell me.

4) SeaQuest is an information black hole. I only found a species list on their corporate website and used that for all of their too many installations. If you know for a fact it differs at an aquarium, tell me and I'll fix it.

5) Sometimes I had to guess based on blurry photos or a split second in a video. Please be kind if I messed up some of the bamboo sharks or dogfish.

6) I included Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands because they had interesting aquariums and I don't think they would get a holder of species list in another section. I know most people don't but, hey. My list, my rules.

7) Thanks to the Birch Aquarium for responding to an email inquiry from a random person.

4) SeaQuest is an information black hole. I only found a species list on their corporate website and used that for all of their too many installations. If you know for a fact it differs at an aquarium, tell me and I'll fix it.

5) Sometimes I had to guess based on blurry photos or a split second in a video. Please be kind if I messed up some of the bamboo sharks or dogfish.

6) I included Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands because they had interesting aquariums and I don't think they would get a holder of species list in another section. I know most people don't but, hey. My list, my rules.

. Last time I visited the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History they had Spiny Dogfish, but It’s been a while since I visited so this may no longer be the case

. Does Indianapolis not have Spiny Dogfish?

I believe Indy has smooth dog fin but I could be wrong there.
Doesn’t San Diego still have leopard sharks with their penguins?

Most if not all of these will be Carcharias taurus, not Odontaspis ferox, just for clarification - the term "sand tiger" is used somewhat indiscriminately. The latter species could be present.

For at least Fresno and possibly others, they more likely have Short-tailed Nurse based on the facilities they have available. Fresno only has a shallow stingray touch pool, and is unlikely to be housing the large G. cirratum. Wouldn't surprise me if other facilities are also this way. Also presumably lumped here is Tawny Nurse Shark (Nebrius ferrugineus) which I know is present but I am not sure where.

I assume this refers to Hemiscyllium ocellatum - I have seen H. trispeculare as well a few years ago at SeaWorld SD, and apparently H. hallstromi is also about.


Sand Tiger also at Newport.

Blacktip Reef also at Living Seas at Epcot, Fort Worth, Houston, Jenkinson's, SeaWorld Orlando, Sealife Carlsbad, Seattle Aquarium.

Zebra also at ABQ Biopark, Discovery Cove, Jenkinson's, Mote Marine Laboratory, Mystic, Ripley's of Canada, Ripley's of Myrtle Beach, Point Defiance.

Does SeaWorld SD still keep Leopard Shark? I thought the aquarium where they were held was closed.

Pacific Angel Shark at Monterey Bay; there should be more angel sharks around as well.

Gray Reef Shark and Sandbar Shark at Aquarium of the Pacific. Whitetip Reef Shark is listed as not being on exhibit.

Great Questions. Unfortunately, I have no USDA reports to precisely determine species here. As a result I’m often limited to whatever common name they’re signed under. This is particularly annoying for nurse sharks, but also keeps me from differentiating potential epaulette shark species variation. I didn’t see anything noted as being one of the other species, but aquariums are often vague on what species they hold. See, all the times I just saw “bamboo shark” or “smooth hound” and had to figure it out.

Whenever I make the first update I’ll incorporate the additions / subtractions you brought to my attention. Thank you for such a thorough comment.

Sand Tiger is almost always (if not always) going to be Carcharias taurus, I can confirm that.
Nurse Sharks are tricky, but as stated most places holding them that lack any large tanks will almost certainly be holding Short-tailed Nurse Shark due to size. Far as Nebrius goes, I'm unsure.
Hemiscyllium ocellatum and H. trispeculare are easily differentiated by photos - the latter has much smaller spots. I'm not sure what the difference is with H. hallstromi offhand. Similarly the main two bamboo sharks are also easily differentiated as adults. I agree the smoothhounds are tricky.

I’m open to people noting if a nurse / sand tiger / epaulette is another species — I’ll happily make the change — but I also doubt I’m going to look back into all 70+ nurse shark and 30+ epaulette shark holders to change it myself. Hope this makes sense? I just kind of need a break from sharks lol.

... Then why did you do this thread, if you don't have much desire to be correct?
 
If I remember correctly Point Defiance's last Sand Tiger, Sammy, passed away in 2021, he was a very elderly individual. I was not under the impression that they had obtained any more, so PDZA should be removed from the Sand Tiger list.
 
The Watsonian Reason for why I'm not currently planning to manually review every epaulette / nurse / sand tiger listing: I am defaulting to what aquariums sign their own animals as. I am not an ichthyologist. I would probably make more errors than not if I evaluated every photo I could find, many unclear or old, to try and determine if it is the most common species or a similar looking but much rarer equivalent. I will trust the aquariums' signage until I am given a reason not to. Furthermore, I think that a lot of facilities with smaller tanks probably just have juvenile Atlantic / Pacific nurse sharks. Look at the list in detail, especially for those facilities with smaller tanks for their nurse sharks. Most of those probably aren't importing a critically endangered species when they have baby sharks (do do, do do, do do) right off their own waters.

The Doylist Reason: I'm not actually a shark expert. I'm a casual zoo / forum-goer and spreadsheet enthusiast who thought this would be a fun project to help the community. It's Christmas. I've spent the last two weeks of my life trawling terrible aquarium websites, tripadvisor, and travel vlogs and then get told that I should either go back and do it again or I don't really care about the project. I didn't even know aquariums were signing shark species wrong on a large scale before posting this. If I had known I wouldn't have done the list. Maybe I'll look into the epaulettes in a few months. In the meantime, if anyone knows of any specific signage errors, please tell me and I will add them to the corrections log for next month.

Thank you to everyone who has pointed out specific changes that need made. I will update the thread when I've accumulated enough to justify it / enough time has passed.

This is why there's very few of us that undertake holder lists, and why they often don't get updated much. Part of putting them together is being able to ID animals that are entirely unsigned or undersigned. As an example, @Great Argus does the parrot one because not only can he ID species, he can ID hybrids and color morphs, both things that are prevalent within the parrot realm. Anyone can throw together a list of holders of parrots based on websites, but that would be atrociously lacking.

Websites are often the last thing a facility updates, as well; another factor in making these lists is knowing where to look to find info. Even with that, off the top of my head I can think of several species that I just checked and are on websites for facilities but aren't on your list.

Do you have any basis for assuming they're young nurse sharks and not a different species? Rare species pop up in the weirdest places, including in the aquarium world. Through my own holder threads and personal tracking, I've learned to never make assumptions about a species being held. Always verify with images.

Part of deciding to do a holder list is putting in research to learn things like that ahead of making it. I'm not trying to be rude, but two weeks is a minuscule amount of time for a holder list. The ungulate thread is an extreme example, but I spent over half a year, 5+ hours most days, working on it. I would love to keep it more up to date but that thread probably took a solid month out of my life, at least, just in total hours alone. I keep my personal spreadsheet up to date with changes I come across, but I often don't work to verify things, especially to the level that updates would be worthy of zoochat.

For many places along the Gulf Coast that may very well be true - however Short-tailed Nurse Shark is captive bred state side in aquaculture farms in at least small numbers. It is fully possible for many places to be holding the dwarf species rather than be changing out a much larger one.

They're not, inherently - rather just not being fully specific in most cases. "Bamboo Shark" can refer to quite a few species, vs for example Brown-banded Bamboo Shark. Similar to just saying macaw or bear, essentially.

I wouldn't re evaluate Sand Tiger - the majority if not all of the population is Carcharias taurus. I brought it up for clarification because no scientific name was given; "sand tiger" is used for a couple species and has been the subject on confusion on the site before.
Nurse sharks I think would be rather tricky to assess between the multiple species. I do think perhaps some sort of note might be appropriate if nothing else.
Epaulettes I do think are worth a revisit, as while the one species will certainly constitute the majority at least two other species are present in the NA trade. They are reasonably distinguishable as adults and is worth a look, personally.

Nobody's said you should redo the thread. However, with all due respect, it really doesn't feel like you're coming across with the best attitude towards the project. It's never fun realizing there's parts of the list that need more effort than originally thought - but the list is the better and more insightful after doing it. My comments have been in the interest of adding further value to the thread, and clearing up some potential points of confusion. I'm not trying to annoy you.
