Mixed species exhibit ideas

Has any place mixed Matschie's tree kangaroos in an aviary with birds? I'm thinking of an exhibit that houses them alongside Raggiana bird of paradise, pheasant pigeons, beautiful fruit doves, hooded pitta, blue-faced honeyeater, and metallic starlings.

Husbandry guidelines recommend tree-kangaroos are not housed with avian species due to the risk of avian tuberculosis.

This document cites multiple incidents of inter-species aggression where Matschie’s tree-kangaroos have attacked wallabies; while tree-kangaroos (species unspecified) have killed Nicobar pigeons, swamp hens, Cape Barren geese, kookaburras, Bourke’s parrots, grey goshawks, Gouldian finches and Edward’s lories.

In Beauval the Tree Kangaroos are housed with a couple of extremely shy Bettongs.
Nonetheless this mix don't seem to be problematic, and the Bettongs bred successfully several times.

Okapi, African Openbill, Abdim's Stork, Ross's Turaco, and Marbled Teal.

The enclosure is an aviary where birds are able to fly away from the okapi.

Any suggestions of other species or subspecies of bird that can work? Thank you in advance for the help!

Check out Bioparc Doue in France. There are some European zoos that house okapis inside aviaries, and it's something I wish some US zoos would attempt.

Maybe there should be a mixed species habitat containing takins, tahrs and Chinese gorals.
Honestly, that mix seems like it would work, but seeing as we both live in Alabama, and we know how it can be during the summer :), I don’t know if these Himalayan species would work well in our climate.

As Neil mentioned, they've been held with a number of birds before.

Sadly I'm not too familiar with Doue de la Fontaine so I can't provide a species list. But Blijdorp zoo also has an aviary with Okapis, this one holds:
Common hoopoe
Snowy-crowned robin-chat
Purple glossy-starling
Superb starling
Speckled mousebird
Northern carmine bee-eater
Barn swallow
Western plantain-eater
Guinea turaco
Violet turaco
European turtle dove
White-faced whistling duck
Marbled teal
Yellow-necked francolin

I believe Doue at least has Goliath herons, Guineafowl, Palm-nut vultures and Black-crowned cranes. So I'm fairly certain there's no real limits to Okapi + Bird cohabitation. If you want a suggestion for Central African birds I can help with that

I'm not sure it would work with males of all species. Antwerp once tried to keep tahrs and takins together, but the male tahr died after picking a fight with a takin, and loosing.

Thank you for both of your responses! Extremely helpful!

Would 1.7 acres be considered enough space for the following mix and/or what changes would be suggested to make it adequate (I'm doing a redesign of a zoo where expansion wouldn't be possible):
  • 1.2 Masai giraffe
  • 1.2 sable antelope
  • 3.0 greater kudu
  • 0.2 ostrich
  • 4.0 white-bearded wildebeest
  • 1.5 impala
  • 1.5 springbok
Also, while I know it isn't geographically accurate, how would Aldabra tortoises work in the same exhibit as lemurs (species undecided)?

It should be fine. Many zoos have pulled it off, mostly with things like ring-tailed or ruffed lemurs, the sort of species at are usually the ones that go in walkthrough exhibits. It seems if it's safe enough for zoo visitors to be in the same exhibit with a lemur species, it's fine for a tortoise too.

Could king, chinstrap, gentoo and macaroni penguins work? I think I’ve seen this mix somewhere on here but I’m unsure. If so, could any other penguin species be added to this mix?
