Wildlands Emmen Wildlands Adventure Zoo News 2023

Yesterday evening, a group of Tiger limias (Poecilia islai) arrived in Wildlands, which can be seen in the aquariums of Animazia. This species is critically endangered in the wild and only occurs in a lake in the Southwestern peninsula of Haiti. The species was only recently discovered (June 2020!) and, with Wildlands included, is now held in only 5 zoos in Europe

Poecilia islai is available in the aquariumhobby and many people breed them. I have them to since a few years and have a lot of offspring. But because it's a small fish that isn't so much appealing to visitors, not many zoos keep them.

One of the drawbacks of ZooTierListe I suppose... Especially for fantasy zoos

I noticed that the Dutch/Belgian zoo website Laafsekikkers is a lot more popular for Wildlands news. Here's some of the big news shared over the last year:

Soon, a group of six Southern brown tortoises (Manouria emys emys) will move into the former Three-banded armadillo enclosure in Rimbula.

Reading back the thread, the Armadillo move also hasn't been mentioned yet, so; the Three-banded armadillos in Rimbula have moved into the Squirrel monkey indoor enclosure at Monkey Market. Their enclosure has been empty for a little while now. The Azara's agoutis in the Monkey Market indoor enclosure have moved into the Monkey temple

The Tiger Limias have moved into the old Axolotl aquarium in Animazia, the Axolotls have moved to either behind the scenes or another zoo.

The Hingeback tortoises have finally moved out of their crappy tree stump in the Butterfly temple, this is now used as a place for the Atlas moths to come out of their cocoons. The hingeback tortoises are behind the scenes.

Black paradisefish have been added to the Dwarf crocodile enclosure in the Butterfly temple (These used to be held in a separated Creek in Rimbula). Sumatran halfbeaks were added to the other aquarium in the temple.

There's been a bunch of switch-arounds in the Nortica aquarium, but I'll be updating my zoo guides soon so you'll see the changes there.

Finally, Wildlands has announced they're planning on changing an area of Nortica. The Nortica Hâfen area, which currently has two enclosures for California sea lions and an enclosure for Black rats, will be changed to have more green and resemble a Scandinavian town with typical coloured houses and moss roofs. The only confirmed species will be Seals, but wolves were also mentioned as a possibility, although most say that's doubtful.

Nortica Hafên, the area where sea lions and fur seals live, is soon to undergo a makeover. The Nortica Theatre, the place where sea lion presentations are currently held, will become an enclosure for common seals. After the makeover, the main route will pass through the theatre. The Scandinavian harbour theme will be continued with large buoys, fishing nets and a wooden dock. Where the main route currently goes, there will be an adventurous route with lots of greenery.

To improve the sea lions' visibility, the bridge that partly crosses the water in this enclosure will be halved. Thus, more water will be visible. There will also be two pontoons in the water to create more resting places for the animals.

Yesterday, 20-year-old South American fur seal Gonzo died. Tests by the vet showed he had health problems. To avoid severe suffering, it was decided to euthanise him.

That is really bad as Wildlands - Emmen Noorderdierenpark used to have a really heat group of fur seals. Was he the only breeding male left?

What is the status of the South American fur seals now (how many left, thriving or not)?

Gonzo was indeed the only breeding male. Emmen never had multiple breeding males at the same time with the fur seals.

Wildlands still has two female fur seals. The European ESB (soon to be EEP) population consists of about 17 animals. The last surviving offspring within the ESB population was in 2020.
