Southern black rhino - IRF program

Correct, recommended to receive a male from the AZA program for Eastern michaeli. The change to Eastern black came out of a space survey at the time. Just both male minor are still at DAK till now.

Changes/Queries:
Travis to Forth Worth. When in 2019?
Dubya sent up to Fossil Rim on B/L. When in 20XX? Uhuru was sent back to Abilene only in early February 2023 only.
Limpopo passed away (assumed): Date of death?

Your data for El Coyote are certainly inaccurate. The ranch had a birth in 2019 and a female was due for a birth in 2020. This was pre and first year Covid. Check back the first page of this thread. So at the time the program had at least 3 viable breeding cows in the US (I assume the breeders at El Coyote are the younger ones).

Bull Crocket was indeed born at El Coyote around March 2014. Not sure about sire or dam (but given the 1.5 probably male Gota Gota).
Not sure about most of the above but I do know Dubya was sent to Fossil Rim sometime around late 2021/early 2022.

Re. El Coyote Ranch, that was all I was able to find and was listed on the database. If there have indeed been calves born there as of late; that is absolutely great news for the regional population! It would be even better if Buster (the unproven, younger male) had managed to sire some offspring too.

Allright, I tried to check up or trade reports of the missing links. I found a September not on reproductive studies on Fossil Rim's southern blacks. Dubya have performed semen collection on bull Dubya. He is currently in with one of the females for breeding. The med/vet team will evaluate him whether he is viable as a breeder.

Still no further when he arrived at Fossil Rim though. I have an inkling he arrived in mid/end 2021, just a hunch. His previous location does not name male Dubya in the latter part of 2021.

The female *should* be Mupani - who was mentioned as being the parks breeding female a few years ago on their socials. Mupani’s a proven breeder, albeit a decade ago but I don’t see why she shouldn’t be able to conceive again with a capable breeding bull.

Whilst Dubya isn’t proven yet, he’s still young and hasn’t been in a breeding situation (at least afaik). So there’s no reason to assume he won’t breed.

Curiously, I found a rhino talk from Chehaw WP in Georgia from April 2020 where the keeper mentioned they only have one rhino Sam Houston. This implies that male Dubya had transferred elsewhere before 2020 or sometime in November 2019 was sent to another facility as part of the breeding program.

She almost mentioned where!!! It was Tanganyika Wildlife Park at the time.
From there at some point he must have travelled on to Fossil Rim in late 2021/early 2022 (where I tend to the former).

Whereas I do hope breeding will resume at Fossil Rim chances at 24+ for Mupani (allthough having had a calf previously the chances are saldi slim it will ever happen (I would be glad to be proven wrong ... though).

Last confirmation for Dubya at Tanganyika Wildlife Park was April 2021.

(in June 2022 the park received 1.4 southern white rhino from South Africa).

His move and decision to discontinue holding black rhino for now may have been made with the IRF ex situ program being consulted and the arrival of the white rhino wild caught from South Africa.

The Austin Nature & Science Center is run by the City of Austin Parks & Recreation and only has small native Texas animals:
Austin Nature & Science Center | AustinTexas.gov

The Texas Disposal Systems Exotic Wildlife Game Ranch is a 1175 acre private ranch with more than 100 species:
Exotic Wildlife Ranch - Events Pavilion - TDS

They only host private events for nonprofit organizations currently at their massive pavilion building within the ranch -- but according to my visit with the owners in 2021, they intend to open the property as a public safari park very soon. And although they still list Southern Black Rhino on their website (which has not been updated in some time), they no longer have the species -- only one aging White Rhino named "Tank."

Unsure who you talked to but that Info is incorrect. I am pretty good friends with a few of the ranchers at TDS and I can assure you the black rhino Tom is still there, moyo the other black rhino unfortunately passed away probably 5 years ago. And the white rhinos name is rowdy.

Thank you very much for your update. I just could not find any news item regarding the southern black rhinos while looking at Austin Savannah. It is good to learn bull Tom is still around, allthough unfortunate bull Moyo is no longer around (any further info on his approximate timing of passing)!

Does anyone have transfer and death information on 1.0 "Gundwane", who was San Diego Zoo's breeding bull rhino in the 1990s?
He was wild born around May 1986 in Hluhluwe, South Africa. Then transferred to somewhere called "Natel PB"?. Then finally arriving at San Diego zoo in 1987. According to this article, they brought a wild female from Zimbabwe to breed with Gundwane. One of the 10 exported black rhinos from Africa. The other ones went to Milwaukee and several zoo in Texas. After having a calf with "Chirundu" in SD. He was loaned to "Peace RV" in 2003 and died there in 2004. His cause of death is an infection associated with respiratory fungal. Almost all this information is from the regulation.gov document in 2020. This document is 720 pages long so the search is "Gundwane" with control +F.

Zoo Gets a Rare Rhino in Effort to Save Species
In this Taronga Western Plains Zoo thread:
According to the thread, Gundwane and the female "Chirundu" gave birth to one calf. The male calf is "Ibala". Then the calf went to Taronga. That is all I could find. Hope this help you
