Nepalese red panda birth:

A first for Altina Wildlife Park!

A male red panda cub was born December 17.

The successful rearing of the cub is noted to be an achievement due to the inexperience and age of the mother, Rani, who is nine years old.

Reported on socials.

Other December 2023 News:

On December 7th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) wapiti was born.

And the surprise birth is…

Black and white ruffed lemurs. Triplets (2.1) born to Kintana, who arrived this year. She would have been pregnant on arrival as factoring in gestation doesn’t allow time for the new male (from the UK) to be the father; and the previous post mentioned the birth was a surprise.

NGL, I was hoping for Spotted hyena cubs, but a first time breeding success for the zoo nonetheless. Congrats to Altina!
It's fitting that the infant female's name, Volana, means 'moon' in Malagasy - a connection with mum Kintana's name (meaning 'star') and, personally, the little baby lemur white ears kind of look like crescent-moons to me.

Per Altina's Facebook page, one of the male babies has been named Masoandro, meaning 'the sun', which also fits the celestial theme.

On December 13th, the zoo announced the name of the other (1.0) black-and-white ruffed lemur born, Ruffus Raggamuffin.

I was hoping the third lemur triplet would get a celestial themed named considering his family are as follows:

Kintana (mother) - means ‘star’
Volana (daughter) - means ‘moon’
Masoandro (son) means ‘sun’

Like most Altina babies, they were named via public sponsorship.

Orrrr did the people naming the lemurs play planet zoo since they are also names the game uses :D

Rufus ragamuffin isnt bad, its certainly not going to be recycled like behati.

Planet Zoo use geographically appropriate names like you’d find on a baby name list for that language e.g. Swahili. Names sound different to each culture so the overlap of names that have an appropriate meaning and names that appeal to a Western audience limits the names used throughout the region.

Names that are 15 letters long don’t have the same appeal to the general public as two syllable names for example. The black rhinoceros Dubbo imported from Zimbabwe were named in their homeland and had some interesting choices you wouldn’t get from an Australian zoo (Chitundumusere, Utahwedande etc).

I'll put my hand up and say that I named Masoandro and I didn't know about the Planet Zoo connection. I found it on Behind the Name (so, exactly as mentioned, on a baby name website) as it's one of the more reliable ones. The zoo had already announced Volana's name, and I appreciated keeping with the theme.

They were still up in the air over whether or not they were going to let Ruffus Ragamuffin through at the time I spoke to Altina, as they had requested a Malagasy name. I'd say that it'll probably get shortened over time, but the same could be said for Masoandro, too (and it's still better than Princess Lasagna Baby).

Masoandro is a great name. Volana is a popular lemur name around the world, with Wellington Zoo holding a female Ring-tailed lemur of the same name.

Ruffus Ragamuffin wouldn’t be my choice. It doesn’t appear to even be a cultural reference, but such names do crop up every now and then. Auckland Zoo had a male red panda named Mungojerre, who later transferred to Hamilton Zoo. I looked him up once and discovered from search results it’s a name of character in the musical Cats. London Zoo recently named a Sumatran tiger cub ‘Loki’. Then of course we have the Nala’s, the Kiara’s etc.

It's such a good name for a lemur!.
It's solid name to have gotten of a naming website, more zoos should use it lol!

Slender-tailed meerkat birth:

The first of what I’m sure will be many birth announcements this year, Slender-tailed meerkat twins.

Reported on socials.

Slender-tailed meerkat update:

The recent pups have been sexed as 1.1 and were born December 8.

Altina is now seeking submissions of Harry Potter themed names in line with their family (BOP, Padfoot, Mooney, Tilly, Remus and Weasley).

As a proud Slytherin, I’d love to see some representation from that house - Draco, Bellatrix, Narcissa, Lucius etc.

Yes, although I don't know if they would want to name her after such an evil character. Narcissa would be a better choice imo, as she gets a slight redemption in the end.
(Sorry, I take Harry Potter way too seriously!)

Narcissa Malfoy is an excellent mother and loyal to her family, so that could be a good choice.

That said, Bellatrix is no less appropriate when you consider the infanticidal tendencies of this species. Pregnant females are notorious for killing the newborn pups of their sisters, cousins etc. Bellatrix (who killed her niece) is a realistic reference to the natural social order of the species.

While zoos tend to highlight the more positive attributes of their species, occasionally you see a bluntly honest name e.g. Tsotsi the chimpanzee (Swahili for ‘thug’); or Spitter the chimpanzee.

Considering how dominant female meerkats can act to other females. Bellatrix would be fitting if she were to be put into a breeding situation lol. Just as zoo fan said, they can be quite ruthless.
