ZOO Plzeň Plzen zoo news

The zoo opened a new exhibit - Fish Ark. It´s just a single room situated near the village farm (just turn corner behind baroque white donkey). It has rows of 16 water tanks that showcast rare or already extinct-in-wild small freshwater fish species.

The city has agreed to buy 1 hectare of almost empty land next to the zoo for circa 1mio euro. A sloped area behind brown bears. It will allow the zoo to build there new exhibits for Eurasian animals in future.

Yesterday, this deal was successfully closed and the zoo got keys from enlargement area. It will start with some cleaning and demolishion works in next weeks.

Unless I missed it I did not find the word "sloni" in the Source/Message. Any news about elephants for Plzen?

According to ZTL, from Walsrode also arrived a male of Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor), but it's probably off show.

The zoo received permit to continue to keep and breed muntjacks and nutrias. Both species are on EU invasive species list and thus overall prohibited since last year.

The Chinese goral exhibit is no longer empty. Plzen used to keep 2 goral females but coudn´t get a male due to shortage in breeding program. Thus it sent them both into breeding situation to France (d´ Auvergne) in dec 2022. Meanwhile, the goral house received repairs. And in Nov 2023, a new pair arrived - 3 years old female from Plock and a 1 year old male from Prague.

I was recently going through my photos from my trip to Plzen last November (2023) and I found a video of a bird I'm pretty sure is a male Hill Partridge (Arborophila torqueola). If this is the case this species would only currently be found in Walsrode and Plzen in all European collections. Can anyone else corroborate this?
