Zootierliste Goes Worldwide

Can JAZA's database be used as a reference to cite? It's open to the public, with the downside that it is sometimes inaccurate and outdated.

The idea of ZTL is to add the most accurate and update info based on your observations during actual visits or on official info provided by the zoo (like annual reports, population census and press releases). The JAZA database is, as you've stated yourself, not really always up to date...

May I ask why Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar are only listed as part of the United Kingdom, when Bermuda is not, Faroe Islands get their own entry, just as all the French overseas territories. Jersey and the Isle of Man aren't even part of the United Kingdom and Gibraltar is some 1500 km away, 3 times the distance from the Faroes to Denmark. I have raised this multiple times, but never gotten an answer. Geography is mostly accurate, so this really stands out.

A couple of questions:

1. Is name/surname required when registering to be granted Zoofreund privileges?
2. Is there a certain date by which seen or signed species are considered outdated? For example, is information from 2020 or 2021 still considered valid today?

It helps to see how "real" a person is. It is just visible to the admins.

It always depends if there are more current entries from newer dates. But every bit helps :)

Hello, this question may have already been asked, but what if there is a species (more specific subspecies) of an animal not on the website, for example, the Indianapolis Zoo has both subspecies of Scarlet Macaw, but there is only a page for the full species. Also, the zoo has Amphiprion leucokranos, which isn’t on the website either. Is there any way that I or anyone can add these. Thanks for further advance!

I realise I have created a duplicate listing by adding Tambraparni Barbs (Dawkinsia tambraparniei) under London Zoo as a current holding, when they were already under former. Sincere apologies on my part, and is there any way to fix this?

Please write an email or a message on the notice board on the website. Please note, that we have a bit of a backlog when it comes to adding species and subspecies.

They should be formatted in a similar format to the following French Overseas Territories:

So they would be:
  1. United Kingdom/Isle of Man
  2. United Kingdom/Gibraltar
  3. United Kingdom/Bailwick of Jersey
  4. United Kingdom/Bailiwick of Guernsey
...and then the relevant zoological collections will need to be moved to these categories as follows:
  1. Ballaugh (Curraghs Wildlife Park
  2. Gibraltar (Alameda Wildlife Park)
  3. Trinity (Jersey Zoo - vormals Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust)
  4. Saint Peter Port (Guernsey Aquarium - geschlossen 2019) ; Guernsey (Zoo / Bird Gardens - geschlossen 1990) ; Guernsey (The Accidental Zoo - geschlossen 2022)

Thanks. It seems most easy to follow the existent precedent so

Gibraltar would be included as United Kingdom / Gibraltar as it is an overseas territory and those are generally listed that way, like the French overseas territories (la Reunion) or a Dutch special municipality (Bonaire).

For Jersey and the Isle of Man I would also list them as

United Kingdom / Jersey
United Kingdom / Isle of Man

While both are independent from the United Kingdom, they are still Crown Dependencies, falling directly under the British crown, they are to quote Wikipedia: "territories for which the United Kingdom is responsible". In that sense they are similar as the relationship between the Faroe Islands and Denmark and Aruba, Curacao & St. Maarten with the Netherlands. They are all independent countries, within the same kingdom, but not sovereign states by themselves given defense and foreign affairs are run by the "main" country of the kingdom they belong to. Given they are not 100% sovereign and the precedent in Zootierliste is to list them as such, this would seem logical.

How should we handle rescue centers? Should we list species for them only if 1) the center is open to the public and 2) we are certain the animal is non-releasable?

If it is open for the public at least one day a year, then you add it.

Species can be listed that were seen, there is not a amount of keeping-time.

As regards the second point, I would suggest that it doesn't matter whether or not a rescued species is non-releasable - for instance there are several European zoological collections which have off-display bat rehabilitation facilities, and Budapest has rehabilitation facilities for a wide range of rescued wildlife, with all species concerned (even those released shortly afterwards) added to ZTL when relevant.

Blijdorp has Europe's only Kemp's Ridley turtle, which will be released somewhere this year, as soon as it has recovered, but it is still listed as a holding under ZTL. The species are simply moved to former holdings once the animal is released.

I think the collection must be open to the public in order to be listed

Very exited by this news and I am eager to contribute, but I have one problem. I would like to make edits, but my level is listed as "Beobachter" (Observer). Is there a reason I am not able to edit and if so would someone mind telling what that reason is?
