SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego News

Ahhh the chicks looked bigger than the kings including one that was huddled with the emporers. My mistake

The fluff makes them look so big :) If you look at photos of hundreds of them in the wild, it's hilarious seeing all of the adults waddling around, looking for their gigantic children.

I am going to visit Seaworld San Diego this December. Can anyone tell me what kind of lighting is it in the penguin exhibit, particularly the emporer pengiuns. Do they synchronized with the current summer season of the Antarctic? which means 24 hours day time lighting

Hello! The lighting is synchronized with the current summer season of the Antarctic so you will get to see them in perfect light 24 hour a day light. Have fun and enjoy yourself! I would recommend going to do the rides as you as you get there and then spend the rest of the day with the animals to avoid lines the best.

Perfect. Thank you for the info. I happen to time my trip just for this. This is a great help.

Do SeaWorld San Diego still keep Guadalupe fur seals? zooinstitutes lists them on the site but it has not been updated since 2014. Also what other pinnipeds are currently kept at SeaWorld as the website says sea lion point is home to both sea lions and seals without naming specific species.

SeaWorld California currently has 2 (1.1) Guadalupe Fur Seals. Female is Chickaree and was a non-releasable strand from 2021. Male (unknown name) is a non-releasable strand from 2015. I am uncertain if they are in animal care, BTS at Wild Artic, or at SeaLion Point.

They keep California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Guadalupe Fur Seals, Walrus, and Ringed Seal. The Ringed Seal may or may not be on exhibit in Wild Arctic at the old Polar Bear exhibit.

Hello! The park currently keeps California Sea Lion, Pacific Harbor Seal, Ringed Seal, Guadalupe Fur Seal, Pacific Walrus, and Northern Elephant Seal. There is female Guadalupe Fur Seal located at Sea Lion Point along with the California Sea Lion and Pacific Harbor Seal. There is also almost always fur seals in the rescue center as they are species that will often become stranded from their mothers. Sea Lion Spotlight is just home to California Sea Lion. Meanwhile the old Polar Bear enclosure in Wild Arctic is home to a male Ringed Seal and two female Harbor Seals. This section of the park is also home to the walrus. There is currently one female elephant seal at SeaWorld who was a rescue but deemed unreleasable and she currently lives behind the scenes in her own enclosure. Their are no plans to put her on public view at the moment either.

Also good to note that some of the rides have tanks in the queues.

November Updates:
A small herd of Reindeer is now on display for the holiday season in the Sky Tower Lawn.

Pearl the Emperor Penguin chick has been moved from the Avian Nursery to a fenced off portion of the main Penguin Encounter. Her enclosure is surrounded by rocks and a non-see through material so unfortunately guests can still not see her with normal admission.

The injured pair of bottlenose dolphins have been moved from the Rescue Center back to the main stadium now that they have both recovered from her injury.

The park recently received a group of new Southern Stingrays along with multiple new species of fish which will soon be put on display in the Atlantis Aquarium.

He’s still the only Beluga I’ve seen in captivity, just before he left in Duisburg. I don’t think anyone expected him to live this long, but I’m happy he got to live the rest of his life outside of the bathtub Duisburg kept him in.

Which species of stingray is at SeaWorld San Diego in the Atlantis tank by the water ride? It's larger than the Southern Stingrays in the sea turtle tank, gray, and has keeled spikes along the back and tail. Roughtail Stingray from the Atlantic Ocean?

Do you have a photo?

It looks like both the stingrays in the sea turtle tank and the Atlantis tank have the keeled back and tail, which southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus) have. Maybe they divided an import of them so the larger ones are housed in one tank, and the smaller ones in another? The color also varies between them, with the ones in Atlantis being grayer and the ones with the sea turtles being browner.

Does anyone know if the common murres/guillemots in the puffin exhibit are the subspecies U. a. californica, or another subspecies?
