Can confirm Dubbo do indeed have eleven zebras at the moment.

Zuri is on the savannah, with Khari and Runanko. He is actually twenty nine years of age at the moment!

The other three in with the giraffes are therefore Marzuka, Kwasi and Mstari.

I was also advised Dalia (2019) sadly died a while back which is a shame to hear.

I will post an update in the population list once I hear back from some other facilities too.

I'm sorry to hear about Dalia's death. An article announcing the birth of Mara mentioned Dubbo had five females at the time, so she likely passed sometime shortly after that.

I think it's likely that Crossing is a house name/nickname for Mara. One of the zebras in the breeding group did appear younger.

When I last contacted Dubbo in December of 2022, Dalia was still alive, so it’s likely she died soon after that - early last year.

It's ironic that he is out at western plains zoo and never transferred back to Taronga. Considering if I am remembering correctly they swapped him over in favour of a younger pair so they could breed zebra in the new enclosure. But last I was at Taronga they were saying they were for display only.

All the open range zoos in the region hold bachelor herds, so it was a natural place for a surplus male to end up. Taronga received 1.1 (Bwana and Kioni) when their African precinct opened. Bwana has since died and has been replaced by a male named Obi, who is now castrated. Taronga Zoo have no plans to breed zebra.

I don't think Taronga were ever going to breed the zebra considering how well represented Bwana was. The zebras were also kept in a 1.1 pairing which would've been quite unnatural for breeding too. It's likely both Bwana and Kioni were transferred over with the intentions of them being non breeding individuals.
