Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

At this point, it is pretty clear that Frontier does not consult Zootierlist (or similar) to pick their species. Saiga, Baird's Tapir, Proboscis Monkey, Grey Seal, 3-toed-Sloth, etc are very uncommonly kept in zoos (or not at all) and we still have them. And I do not think most of the players (<90%) really care if the species is kept in zoos or not. They just want cool animals. It has been clear that Frontier is not strict about that for quite a while.
The META wishlist is voted by the players, not the Frontier staff, the Frontier does take the demand of players into consideration but does not 100% follow. Within the recent 2 years, the Frontier tends to offer 1-3 top 10 demanded species from the wishlist which are what the players want, like Red River Hog, Lar Gibbon and Fossa in tropical pack, Tasmanian Devil and Kiwi in Oceania pack, Wolverine and Takin in Eurasia pack. But the Frontier also has their own favor, which might be considered as "odd" by us. For example, they love Caimans (in fact both Caimans in the game are bottom-ranked in wishlist, the vote for Spectacled Caiman is 0:p) rather than the much more demanded Nile Crocodile. Same thing to Water Buffalo and Nile Lechwe, which are also bottom-ranked, but still offered by the Frontier.

Numerous holdings of grey seal in Europe - fair enough on the other ones!

I think you did not get what I meant. You suggested that their species selection must follow what is part of zoo collections around the world or what people who voted for the metalist see more often in zoos, following a realistic line. I am just arguing that Frontier does not really care much about that (what is part of zoo collections or not). If Frontier looks to the metalist, it is another story, which in my opinion the metalist does not influence that much Frontier's decision-making.

Compare it with holders of harbour seal... which is common both in Europe and in North America. Frontier really follows the species that are more common kept in zoos as you see. So between Hamadryas and Gelada, it is a 50/50 choice. Frontier does not care which one is kept in higher numbers or not.

The question that you initially asked was why so many people prefer Hamadryas over Geladas, and other guy mentioned about Olive. These 3 species are not in the game yet, so we don't know which one is what the Frontier favorite, so people here in your question should refer to the voters of wishlist, which are the players, not the Frontier staff. I would say the top 10 species in wishlist do influence the Frontier's decision-making, the rest do not.

While Baird's Tapir is nearly absent from Europe, they're an SSP program over here and so a bit more understandable than some others you list.
Gray Seal is held much less than Harbor on both sides, they are at least present and not too difficult to find.

I was thinking a bird dlc would be nice because IMO this game needs flying birds!!! I mean, come on, there are not many dlcs left!!!
While I understand the frustration over flying birds (I was borderline angered when they added butterflies before birds!), I think at least they've done a better job lately incorporating non-flighted birds into other themed packs. We finally have waterfowl in the form of mute swans, red-crowned cranes were added, emus, little penguins, and more. While I'd love to see a flighted bird pack, I would be happy seeing a bird pack that doesn't include flight:
  • In real zoos, king penguins are almost always found in mixed-species displays, so seeing a second sub-Antarctic penguin (such as the southern rockhopper penguin) would be a great addition.
  • Since we already have the red-crowned crane, adding a crane exhibit from another continent (such as the whooping, sandhill, or black-crowned/gray-crowned crane) would be a very welcome addition.
  • Personally, one thing I'd love to see is the wild turkey in game, as it's another iconic bird species that'd be great to include.
  • While we already have three of the four types of ratites, the greater rhea would be a welcome addition to the roster, and would work well in mixed-species exhibits with the peccary.
  • As mentioned in this thread, the secretary bird is a much-requested species, and well-known from Zoo Tycoon. It'd be a logical inclusion to a birds pack.
  • The bald eagle, while it'd be an unexpected pick, are often kept as rescues which can't fly, so would be a realistic addition for a smaller bird into the game.
  • Building off the fact we got a swan, another species of waterfowl- personally I'd like to see the red-breasted goose, but something like a mandarin duck or white-faced whistling duck, both very common zoo animals would be welcome additions instead.
  • For the walk-through exhibits, I could imagine budgeriars or lorikeets be a logical next step based on the inclusion of butterflies and bats, and while not as exciting as, say, building large aviaries, would be a great, common in zoo addition.
See what I said in the reply #2316, Primates require a lot of work in making models due to their complex movements like climbing and swinging, the Frontier rather clones Bovidaes to save time and effort.
How is it any more work to clone a bovid than non-extensive clones of monkeys? I understand some monkeys may be out of question, but I can't imagine it'd be too difficult to turn the white-faced capuchin into a brown capuchin or even into a black howler monkey. Then again, I've found the primates we do get are some of the least realistic, most frustrating animals in the game, so I can understand that may have something to do with focusing on other taxa instead (despite primates being most of the common zoo mammals missing from the game at this point).

Currently we have 19 Bovids but just 4 monkeys, some Bovids are almost copy & paste of another, like African Buffalo and Water Buffalo, American Bison and Wisent. In fact we don't get any new monkey after the Southeast Asia pack. The Frontier only releases 1 Primate species each year starting from 2020, the only exception is 2021 when the Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur was offered through the Anniversary update. Monkeys are definitively not less-known species, since you mention that Primates in the game are some of the least realistic, which also supports the fact that making Primates is more difficult than many species (probably b/c the movements of Primates are very complex, not only climbing and swinging, but also how they play, how they interact with each other), so the Frontier wants to save time and work and does not offer that many monkeys.

Two interesting facts: the price of the Deluxe edition is US$11.99 on Steam, while the price of DLCs is US$9.99, the Deluxe only offers three species and no scenery pieces. Is the soundtrack and wallpaper worth 2 more dollars than 6 species or 2 species plus hundreds of scenery pieces?
Most scenery packs offer 200+ scenery pieces, the only two exceptions are Aquatic and Conservation packs which only contain no more than 150 pieces, is it b/c these two DLCs introduce the new animation that cost the Frontier's extra effort?

It's because the other big selling point of the Deluxe Edition was originally that you got early access to the game, a fair way pre-release. That's obviously now long redundant but they've never adjusted the pricing for the standalone Deluxe upgrade.

(I bought it after release but with the base game, so the difference wasn't as much)

The scenery piece numbers do fluctuate quite a bit but yes, I wouldn't be surprised if the new mechanics that accompanied Aquatic and Conservation had an impact.

hey guys, what's up, did you guys heard about the annoucement about the console edition of planet zoo?

I saw a hint on their Facebook page and thought to myself "Finally". I have been wanting to play this game since it was released in 2019 but I don't own a gaming PC and now it is likely coming to Xbox One (what I have) which I am really excited about.

I am hoping on Planet Zoo console edition that you still have the option to play with a keyboard and mouse or a controller just like on Planet Coaster.

Super excited to be finally getting my hands on this game and hopefully each DLC.

You for sure will be able to play with a controller, but I think you'd have a hard time hooking up a keyboard to a console. :p
