Hello ZooChat Enthusiasts!

After following the ZooChat forum for a while now, I'm excited to join your community. I'm very interested in wildlife conservation and am a member of the Los Angeles Zoo. I enjoy visiting the zoo frequently and photographing the animals. I've been to a number of zoos and aquariums in Southern California and the Pacific Northwest and hope to visit many more!

I'm entering my 20th year of private music teaching and currently give online piano lessons. I also have a photography website featuring my wildlife, bird, flower and nature images: Lori Lee Patton Photography

Looking forward to participating in the ZooChat forum conversations with all of you!

Hi, @Lori Patton , and welcome!
It's exciting, that you're a member of LA Zoo! Do you get to visit the orangutans there often? Two of them, Isim and Gangsa, are former residents of Auckland Zoo here in New Zealand, and Isim was born here. Gangsa is the half-sister of Melur, our zoo's mother orangutan.

Thanks @ApeLadyNZ for the info on the orangutans -- I didn't know they had come from New Zealand! I last saw them in November and there were three in the exhibit then. I usually visit the zoo for two or three hours at a time and only go to certain sections so I don't always get to their exhibit as often as I'd like. Isim is the biggest orangutan I've ever seen and they are all so gentle and fun to observe!

Recently, Rosie (42-years-old) had a major operation to remove a large fibroid and Isim gave her a blood donation! There is an article in the zoo's magazine, Zoo View (Winter '24), about the medical procedure with several pictures. Here's a link: Zoo View - Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Thank you so much for the link! It's wonderful that Isim was able to do that for Rosie and I hope she makes a full recovery. Yes, Isim is a big, handsome fellow now - a far cry from the little guy I have fuzzy memories of from years ago. His father was Horst, who just passed away last year and was at the time the oldest male Bornean orangutan in the USA. Isim's mother, Indra, still lives at Busch Gardens in Florida.
