North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

The whole Pittsburg zoo elephant program is not really productive. We have victoria that is just about too old for a first calf and no bull for Angelina and Zuri.
I wonder how Tsuni is doing. There has been no news for a long time. With her being the only produce of a wild born mother she’s fairly valuable.

Victoria's unfortunately now too old to breed at twenty five. Victoria and Angelina are only fifteen so still have a few years, although it would be beneficial to breed them asap.

you mean Angelica and Zuri. :) and yes about Victoria.

They could at least send the girls to another facility and focus on older girls at the actual facility while maintaining Jack at the preserve. The girls at the preserve are too old to breed also.

My question was more about the possibility to reunite matrilines since we know that's it's a trauma to separate mother and daughters. I think sometimes that not only the breeding matter, psychological health of the elephants too !

Considering Moja's an older post reproductive cow I don't think there's any reason for her to be transferred back to Pittsburg where all the space will be needed for a continuation of their breeding program. Obviously it would be nice for the elephants, but realistically unlikely.

It’s harder but I wouldn't say impossible for Victoria to conceive a calf, her window is definitely closing but there is still a chance, look a Sukuri she had her first calf at 28.

yes but weren’t there issues?

And a much older cow in Europe is/was pregnant with first calf and had complications but still alive with I guess the fetus inside her.

This is only my thoughts, not speculation. I do not make the decisions or recommendations.

my thought is that Jack is already profic with his genetics so the zoo can afford NOT to breed Victoria and risk her health. But they do need to get Angelica and Zuri bred because of their mothers. As far I know Callee is the only offspring of Jack reproducing so we can afford two daughters produce their own especially with artificial birth intervals. That will mean only three offspring will reproduce, with the possibly of fourth, a daughter, at the preserve.

I am sure I have forgotten other Jack offspring.

With Sukuri’s pregnancy? not that I’m aware off. I don’t think her pregnancy was even announced only when her calf Tsuni was born. Tsuni did have health complications shortly after being born but has since recovered.

Every pregnancy has its risks.

Male offspring only Callee and female Nadirah has a newborn calf

In Europe, back transfer were made recently wih good results for the elephant. I think it should be one of SSP priorities to reunite separated matrilines.

Hello, I want to ask some questions. Will Zoo Granby elephants breed together?(Tutume and Thandi). Thandi was brought from Pittsburgh Zoo. I heard that Thandi was wild-caught with two other elephants. Tutume was born in Berlin Zoo. They are together for like maybe 4 years and live in the same habitat. They are African elephants

No I don’t see breeding happening. Granby has plans to phase out elephants in the next few years so I doubt that they’d try to breed them now.

She did have a calf (I don't believe it survived though) back at Serendib. This would've been around fifteen or so years ago now, so probably a little too long imo.
Yeah her calf died because I think she did not care for the baby,
Based on her age and being an unproven female, I doubt it'd be worth trying, tbh.
But she is a wild caught so new genetics. Am I right? I think it would be worth trying artificial insemination

Probably wouldn't be happening at Granby though - the best option is to send her to another facility for natural breeding (which again, is unlikely).

Thandi never had a calf prior, that was Seeni.
We tried A.I. and natural breeding but neither took. She was also the "problem" elephant socially so the decision was made to send her Granby
Thanks for clearing that up. Her apparent calf didn't have any birth/death date whatsoever on the records, so perhaps was a mistake.
