Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

Visited briefly today.

- Supposedly the crowned lemurs are opposite the drill enclosure at the moment since their enclosure is next to the demolition site, I’m thinking they’re probably in the small cage which formerly held parrots and also stump tailed macaques before, though I didn’t get to see them.

- The demolition has made progress with most of the walls on the top section gone now.

- There is a huge pile of wood just outside of magic forest with barriers around it, which has signs on it with it saying the east side of living links is closed, but they were turned over, so I think you can now.

Hopefully I will be able to visit again in the February Holidays so might have more news soon.
Is that whole part where the Banteng are all getting redeveloped?

Edinburgh need to focus on animals the public can actually see. They have a lot of nocturnal species.

They also need to understand that people go to zoos more to see animals than take their kids to playparks or eat afternoon tea

The banteng area is being renovated so that new banteng can come in. The area where the porcupine were is being changed to remove the lemur house so that a new lemur house can be built and the porcupine can return to the enclosure at the bottom.
That actually sounds like a good plan! I do hope they will not haphazardly redevelop and put some focus to new areas with a Savannah and a Tropical Rainforest area and Madagascar island theme along those lines.

Posting harmful and unsubstantiated rumours of this sort, and refusing to provide evidence for these claims, reflects very badly indeed on this site and the community therein. Given the fact that zoological collections are known to keep tabs on what has been posted here, I fear the damage in this case has already been done.

On the subject of Banteng, the website confirms there is now only 1.0 (Struan) left in Edinburgh, does anyone know what happened to the other male (Struan's father)?

I agree it has no place here. However, I do not think private ramblings by ex keepers or third party sources is the public domain. Unsubstantiated clamouring and opportunistic posturing does not improve discourse on this Edinburgh Zoo news thread.

Spoke to Edinburgh Zoo this morning and can confirm that the Zoo is not closing and there is currently an investment program going on. I feel the perpetrator of the rumours should be removed from this thread.
Have asked for my post to be removed but I never said it was closing so no idea where you got that from also I said keep going meaning the way there going with the amount of animals that keep getting removed there's less and less animals each year

It’s easy to infer you suggested it was closing or coming to an end. What do you think ‘won’t keep going for long’ means to most people?

Whoever told you this or suggested it could get into trouble - some people don’t welcome their employees commenting on social media and will try and find who it is - making everyone’s life uncomfortable. Also consider if you had the persons permission to post - did they know they would be ‘quoted’ on a zoo forum stating everyone is leaving and the zoo ‘won’t keep going?’.

Secondly it’s really unsubstantiated rumour and you’d need at least some actual substance for it to be more than that.

It’s actually good to care about zoos and their running and have concerns if things aren’t going well or you worry they are not. But it doesn’t help to start a fire about it.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been a RZSS member for about 7 years now and found this site whilst looking for information on a couple European Zoos collections before visiting. Have to say this forum has been really helpful enhancing my visits to Edinburgh especially with news about the drills lately who are becoming firm favourites!

The koala cam seems to have been upgraded and it has night vision. There has been a lot of activity in there this evening!
