The opening post states a freshwater billabong will be constructed to house Freshwater crocodiles.

In addition to opening the Cheetah exhibit last year, they renovated the elephant exhibit; opened a Quokka exhibit and a new Koala exhibit; Australian King parrots made a return to the zoo; and Irwin’s turtle went on display (a world first).

Hopefully with the accomodation up and going. A decent source of income will be added to the zoo. Hopefully this will lead to the zoo adding some new exotics.
It has been a while since they have added anything substantially new to the zoo. It has the space and the potential to be an amazing zoo.
Personally I have always thought with the tropical climate the zoo should have acquired orangutan and gibbons and gone into them. They would fit the asian theme the zoo has with the elephants, tiger binturongs and otters. They have the space to create nice, interactive exhibits.

Your quite right @Tiger91 It has been quite some time since AZ has added anything substantial to the zoo, I believe the new Cheetah exhibit was likely built more from a need to remove them out of the Tiger holding area once and for all. The Cheetahs have been off show to the public since arriving at the zoo years ago and one had to be lucky enough to be in the right place and time to get to see one being taken for a walk.
Again you're quite right the Tropical Climate would be ideal for having the great apes like Gorillas and Orangs which were going to be added to the zoo years ago. The long since gone information on the zoo website had stated they were going to build the worlds largest Gorilla exhibit but now alas just a memory of the past, Unfortunately I believe since Steve had passed some of his ideas passed with him, He had a strong interest in Gorillas and Orangs and even visited the Huge Troop at Howell's in the UK. I believe the current Lemur Island was originally planned to be the Gorilla Island.

I actually seen cheetahs up there when I was about 11 or 12, im 32 now and they are only just going on display in there own area. I was disappointed as I was more interested in seeing the tigers!. They used to rotate them in one of the exhibits.

Yes I remember those plans. I dare say. your quite right, that the lemur island was originally for gorillas. I remember watching or reading Steve mentioning that he had a fondness for how Singapore zoo exhibits orangs, and wanted to emulate that. After visiting the zoo I always thought that would be such a great idea. The zoo, at least back when I last visited again many years ago. Was landscaped so well with the tropical environment. Tropical asian species fit right in, and there exhibits would look great.

I remember the plan was for 3 stages but unfortunately never reached stage 2 or 3. I also recall that a muti species Tiger breeding complex was mentioned but again nothing came of it.
Another point of interest was having muti species of Lemurs but now currently having the 2 species even though I believe the Black and White Ruffled Lemurs have never been on public display as far as I am aware. I believe one can pay extra and see them off exhibit as a meet and greet.
Orangs seemed to be of big interest to Steve but again plans seem to evaporate.
I do like the wonderful tropical gardens there the plantings are outstanding if only the collection was up to the standard put into the grounds the place could be first class but unfortunately it lacks in so many areas with the animal collection.

Its a very minimal exotic zoo really only focussing on the 'popular' exotics. However as most of there income comes from tourists with a large number coming from overseas. It makes sense to focus on the natives. There crocodile exhibits were outstanding last time I seen. With natural looking billabongs with large easily viewable crocodiles.

With the way the zoo is built it would be nice to see them flesh out there species lists with more primates and felines.

I have to agree, It is a very minimal collection of exotics, Not one monkey or Lion to be seen considering they do have as a display an African Savanna, Also not one antelope of any species has ever set foot (hoof) in the zoo to date. I have seen questions on their social media pages from the public asking why Lions ect are not there but I have not seen ant real reply to them.
If natives are to be such a big part of the collection for the overseas visitors then why not display Tree Kangaroos even if it was Queensland's very own show case species?,Why not Platypus and Quolls?,

Popularity, the only reasoning I can come up with is popularity. Platypus are popular but difficult to display, quolls and tree kangaroos are not something the general population or foreigner knows of.
All the species would make great additions to there collections tho.

Since Steves death the zoo hasn't really progressed as far as species goes. At one point it may have been state laws making it difficult but darling downs and other zoos are importing and displaying exotics now.

It would probably help there revenue if they added more species. There tropical climate bodes well with a lot of the species the region prioritises. And its not hard or overly difficult to build exhibits to display primates like gibbons on. Given they can just build islands like western plains. They have the room and the water.
 
I dont think they should go into too many primates when wildlife HQ is only 15 mins drive away and they really focus on primates and do them well. It would be stepping on their toes too much.... not that it would stop the Irwans if they so desired

There is certainly much they could do to expand their African collection, I believe displaying just 2 Zebra for their African Savanna is not really cutting the mustard. Even without importing, some Baboons could be added in a new rocky exhibit that would be both entertaining and interesting, Both Hyenas and Painted dogs could be obtained without to much trouble as well. I believe having even a trio of Lions would be very popular with the public and also been asked for on the social media.
Some species of antelope could be added to the current Giraffe/Rhino enclosures with out the need to build any new exhibits or even import them, Oryx, Addax and Nyala also Eland could be obtained to add interest and a better display for the public. Even a couple of Ostrich could be added without a major cost they certainly have enough off display room to operate a nice verity if they so wished.

Yes, I'm sure that the Irwins would be able to create an amazing zoo if they really wanted to, with all the money they've most likely got!
