Tierpark Hellabrunn Munich zoo news

Recent genetic research, according to the zoo for the first time in the world, has determined the species make up of the flamingo group at the zoo. In total the zoo had 94 flamingos, 55 turned out to be Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), 2 were American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) and the remaining 37 were hybrids. The zoo only wants to focus on greater flamingo's so the other flamingo's have recently left the zoo.

Recently female South-East Asian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) Panang was send to Zoo Zürich.

The zoo announced the arrival of 1.0 lynx, 1.0 two-toed sloth, 0.2 bactrian camels, 0.1 Przewalskis wild horse, and 0.0.2 Arctic foxes. When I went to the zoo last Saturday the foxes were very active and the path leading to the indoor holding of the lynx and wolverines were closed in order to introduce the lynxes to each other.

Had a nice visit despite the weather today. The cotton-top tamarins were off display with a sign that said they were.

I finally saw the round-eared sengi for the first time after many visits of seeing a sign saying that there isn’t any.

The construction in the savanna habitat seems to have progressed since my first visit in December with a fresh-looking plank barrier dividing the area in half.

The path that leads to the Villa Dracula and pheasantry has been closed off.

I have visited the zoo after two weeks and after almost a month if no updates here’s some observations from my short visit:

The temporary bridge by the old fallow deer enclosure has been removed. The paiof the enclosure where the shelters are (across the pygmy goats) is being renovated and there’s kune kune signs already.

The round eared sengi is once more off exhibit

The constructions for the jungle world and the savanna enclosures seem to have progressed with the latter having a shade structure installed. However I cannot tell if the Antarctic penguin enclosure is getting any progress.

I forgot to add up that the cotton top tamarins are still iff display.

I just got out of the zoo and other than seeing some of the species I have never seen before finally get out, there were only two observations I personally considered significant. The first one was that the markhor enclosure is signed as unoccupied. I double checked the zoo’s website and maps and any previous signs of markhor were now gone. I hadn’t come across any news regarding where the markhors were sent or if they passed on. Per the masterplan, the zoo plans to convert the area to a maned wolf enclosure. The second news is that the path to the outdoor aviaries by Villa Dracula are finally open with two of the three aviaries holding all signed species (red-billed blue magpie, silver pheasant, alpine rock partridge, and boreal owl.) Considering that the empty aviary was adjacent to the Villa Dracula section it does makes sense that the aviary is also maintenance.

Based on @ralph ’s visits the Apennine chamois are completely gone now. The zoo’s website doesn’t list them and Hellabrunn is listed under former holdings for this particular taxa on ZTL (with no public holdings currently keeping them).

In other (belated) news, the park has Mesopotamian fallow deer on display again. Three individuals reside on the enclosure across the Isar River entrance. The deer were visible behind the chamois enclosure during the renovation of their enclosure.

Off-show during my visit yesterday:
- Wolf
- Mishmi takin*
- Cotton-top tamarin
- Crested porcupine*
- Short-eared elephant shrew*
- Panter chameleon*

* due to construction works

Male giant anteater Inca has arrived from Zurich for a temporary stay as Zurich’s Pantanal exhibit is under construction. When I saw him today he was pretty active in the indoor enclosure.

The wolf enclosure was also under maintenance today.

The renovation of the Antarctic penguin enclosure seem to have progressed with the indoor exhibit having working lights and the pool being filled with water. However there still are barricades around the display area and part of it covered with tarp despite being able to see what is behind it from another window.

2 Capybaras arrived too.
Münchner Tierpark Hellabrunn on Instagram: "Neuigkeiten „aus Südamerika“!
