Asian Elephants in Europe 2024

Bull Sibu will soon move from Dierenrijk to another zoo. After his move, a new bull stable will be built at Dierenrijk, among other things. This is planned to be ready before the summer, after which a new bull will come to Dierenrijk. Which one that will be is not yet known.

Oh.
Good be meaning full.

I saw on the Chester zoo thread that Aung Bo is moving this spring, now we know the time. It’s speculated there that a new bull will be brought in later in the year.

Is there some kind of European Asian Elephant population list on this site? I know that Europe is...bigger than NA and Australia in various aspects but I'd really like to familiarize myself with the individuals and zoos.

oh wow! The current number of known Asian elephant pregnancies currently is tied with the U.S, with one confirmed this year for the U.S, but 3, possibly 4, for next year.
I guess you're not including Canada in this figure as a North American component?

And good news on the Asian front as well! At the same time African cow Punda was giving birth to her daughter at Beekse Bergen, Kungrao at Copenhagen had given birth as well!

While no gender was announced, from the video posted on social media, it does appear to be a cow, which is once again, an excellent addition to the European population!

Great news but the mother is Kumari according to Insta. Kungrao (pregnant) was shown suckling the calf.

Indeed, I posted before the other videos/info had been released, so assumed the one the calf was nursing from was the mother.

Regardless, this is arguably even better news overall (but don’t get me wrong, I still want Kungrao to have a cow calf, too). While Kungrao at least is well socially bonded with Surin and Mun, Kumari is a total outsider, and I’ve always felt quite bad for her, especially since her last calf was shipped out. Although she seems to be socially integrated okay enough with the other cows, you can see she’s usually on the periphery of the social group by herself. With the birth of her daughter, she now has a genuinely positive social companion to keep her company, which is wonderful.

That said, Punda gave birth on the 19th while Maha gave birth on the 20th.

But anyway, a double wow wow.
