Greater Vancouver Zoo Greater Vancouver Zoo News

A couple more transfers of note in the past couple of days:

The last of the red panda cubs, Maple, has been transfered to Granby Zoo.

The first of the musk ox, Tilly, has been sent back to the Calgary zoo. They will be opening their redeveloped Wild Canada section Dec 1st, so Tilly and Garry will have new enclosures.

A few updates this week

Tilly the Musk ox was transferred back to Calgary and Gary should be going anytime now.

There is a new young male zebra that arrived a week ago and is settling in nicely with Sahara.

All the peacocks, veitenmese pigs have been put inside for winter. They are also trying to put away the guinea fowl but so far has avoided capture. The snow goose and mascovy duck are also off exhibit.

I've added the original post from the Toronto Zoo. Couldn't figure out how to edit my other post. Toronto Zoo on Instagram: "Red Panda Update In the coming weeks, we will be saying farewell and hello to some red panda residents. Paprika will be departing this week to Greater Vancouver Zoo as an SSP breeding recommendation. Suva will be departing in the coming weeks to Assiniboine Park & Zoo as an SSP breeding recommendation. Sakura, a 10-year-old female from Greater Vancouver Zoo. Sakura will call the Toronto Zoo home ahead of and during a new red panda habitat renovation in the coming years. Although saying goodbye can be tough (for guests, members, volunteers, and staff alike), animal departures represent a key element in the cooperative aspect of the zoo's work. As an AZA-accredited facility, #YourTorontoZoo actively works with other facilities to connect the animals in our care with their larger populations. We know we can't do it alone! By working together, zoos are able to maximize the wellbeing of our individual animals AND maintain healthy, sustainable populations for the future. This paired commitment to individual wellbeing and survival of populations drives the comings and goings from the Zoo. A lot of preparation goes into transporting animals, including training with their Keepers, behind-the-scenes work from our Animal Logistics coordinator (including permits and transportation bookings), medical examinations from our Wildlife Health team, and more. And despite extensive preparations, sometimes travel plans can change suddenly and unexpectedly! We will keep everyone posted when you can say hello to Sakura "

The new zebra, 2 year-old "Karoo", seems to be settling in well and getting along with resident zebra "Sahara". After so long, it's rather nice to see her have some proper company.

(Pardon the pouring rain, I took this during what was to become the only snowfall we've gotten this year so far lol)

Construction and renovations continue around the zoo. The Safari Grill has been closed for renos for a little while now, and the picnic tables have been moved closer to the entrance to the zoo. As well, the entrance garden itself is undergoing a redesign, with the Triceratops statue being replaced with a sort of deer diorama. Also of note, the horse statues located near the giraffe barn have been removed, along with the subsequent fences.

The front area will be changing again this display was only temporary. The plan is to have it resemble the zoo logo. The big boulder rocks behind the coffee hut will be going there. Taylor the head of landscaping is doing a great job and has planted a ton of flowers around the zoo so cant wait until the spring to see all her hard work. The horse statues were removed a month or so ago as they weren't stable heard they will be fixed up and put somewhere else. The dinosaur that was at the front is now in the dino part by the brontosaurus.

As for Karoo he is a sweet boy but Sahara is really protective of him and if to many people are around she gets upset and starts bucking to move him away from the fence.

The new Red Panda Paprika is being quarantined under the giraffe look out and will hopefully be with Arun in the next couple of days or weeks.

The zoo's lion pride has officially grown to 5 with the addition of "Pumpkin", a very young lioness who's come from what sounds like a similar situation to "Boomer", a former exotic pet. From the zoo's website:

"You may notice a new lion! Her name is Pumpkin and she is a rescue like Boomer. GVZ is recognized as a leader in exotic animal health and welfare and we are often called upon to help in situations where exotic animals are kept in inappropriate situations which was the case with Pumpkin. She was in poor condition when she was rescued and dedicated GVZ staff nursed her back to health. We are so proud of the progress she has made. Boomer and Pumpkin are great examples of why exotic animals do not make good pets."
I had the chance to see her on her first day in the outdoor yard and she is as precious as can be :')

Any word on which pair she's likely to be integrated into, if it happens?

Happy to report that the cheetah enclosure is once again occupied, to quote the zoo's website:

"Come say hello to our new cheetah family! They arrived on Valentine's Day and we couldn't be more excited to welcome them to GVZoo. They are four brothers (5 years old): Kyle, Klaus, Kheops, and Fehli. Welcome home boys!"
I have a big soft spot for cheetahs, so it's incredibly exciting to see the zoo with a whole set (bringing their feline tally back up to 6 species!), and they seem to be settling in nicely.

The new coalition of male cheetahs have arrived and are now on display. Kheops, Klaus, Kyle, and Fehli are brothers who were born at the Columbus Zoo Wilds on August 25th 2018, making them 5 years old.

Interesting! I'd been wondering which zoo they'd come in from. Hoping to visit again soon with my actual camera and get some better photos :)

Not sure, I'll have to ask during my next visit. Personally though, I'd lean towards placing Pumpkin with Boomer and Tess, if for no other reason than the size and age discrepancy between her and Kasal

Have to wonder at the age discrepancy with it being even more considerable between her and Boomer. I'd have thought Kasal's pairing due to his neutering making him possibly more amiable.

Have there been any updates to the cheetah enclosure to support the increased number of individuals?

They haven't decided which pair Pumpkin will be with. I suspect it will be months of slowly introducing her nose to nose with both pairs to see which ones react better to her. Even though Kasal is calmer his sheer strength and size might become a problem but on the other hand Boomer I think would be OK it would be Tess I'd be worried about. I don't think it will be anytime soon though as she needs to grow more before they would put her with either pair.

As for the cheetahs they are in the smaller enclosure at the moment but they have opened up the badger area for them as well. Once quarantine is complete that yard is more than enough space for the four of them.

Spring is really in full swing and with it, a few updates from around the zoo:
  • "Pearl", the zoo's American Miniature horse, turned 29 years old today (May 2nd)!
  • "Woodhouse", a 22-year-old male American white pelican is on display, bringing the zoo's flock up to 5 members. He comes from the Edmonton Valley Zoo and is easily identifiable by his missing left wing. (Source)
  • The zoo's trio of American black bears have been moved to a new exhibit, located adjacent to the adult grizzly bear exhibit.

So some updates as of June 1st.

Today was Bob the donkeys 26th birthday .

There are 3 new baby big horn sheep all born within the last 2 weeks. The moms are Olive, Bianca and Popcorn.

The 3 youngest males 1 yr old Indigo and 2 yr old Hemi and Dodge are over by the zebra now and will be transfered to a new zoo shortly.
( not sure which zoo they will be going to yet)

All 5 lions are out together for the past month or so. Pumpkin still has an enclosure to herself so they are taking turns all being in the middle enclosure.

The Rhino enclosure is being renovated as well as the old black bear enclosure. Hopefully by the end of summer the grizzly cubs will have access to it.

The wallaby walkthru is now open again probably only between 10 am to 3 pm though.

The train is down for the last few weeks hopefully they can get that up and running soon.

Handful of updates, featuring the good, the bad and the... not-as-ugly any more?
  • On June 28th, the zoo's resident male red panda "Arun" celebrated his 10th birthday.
  • "Reggie", the zoo's resident male ostrich, has been removed from the website and is presumed deceased.
  • The joint Southern white rhino and red river hog exhibit received a bit of a renovation recently, including terrain being flattened.
