In April I'm going to visit Singapore. In this city there are many zoos, aquariums and reserves but I've seen that in Malaysia, in the city of Johor Bahru, there is a zoo, right on the border between the two countries. Has anyone visited it? Do they keep any rare species there? I need to know if it's worth the effort and cross the border to go there or if I'd better stay in Singapore. I would only go if there are rare species that are worth it. Thank you.
 
It seems like Johor Zoo have been closed to the general public for the last 2 to 3 years while seemingly undergoing a major renovation. So even if someone have visited it (I believe @DannySG had before the closure) it'll be hard to know accurate infos.

I am also waiting for the reopen, the latest news said Q2 this year. But I don't have high expecation, as the renovation mentioned in the news seems mainy for car park and other facility for tourist instead of animal. Anyhow let's see.

Thanks for posting all of these. I will read them with interest!

I hope their intention is not to be the biggest zoo, but a zoo with quality exhibits, good animal welfare and ex situ conservation breeding tied to conservation projects on the ground in place, especially with tigers and elephants of course.

From the photo and video I could see comparing the visit I did in year 2018, in general, no change in enclosure. The rework done in past years were mainly focusing on the faciltiy for tourists, like the path with shelter, new gate entry, car park, something like these.
 
I visited the zoo this morning and spent two hours there. Since I had already seen plenty of videos beforehand, there were no surprises. As I mentioned earlier, the main changes are in the tourist facilities. The enclosures have been cleaned and improved, but not significantly. The area that used to house small mammals like leopard cats and binturongs is completely closed now.

One thing I hadn’t noticed from the videos, which I personally dislike, is that most of the pictures on the information signs seem to be AI-generated. While some, like the hippo, are acceptable, others don’t quite match the real animals. The worst example is the cassowary—it looks like a hybrid between a crane and a cassowary. Also, they mistakenly used an African elephant image on the sign for an Asian elephant. I’m surprised no one at the zoo has caught this.

Although the 30 RM ticket price to foreigner is cheaper than Zoo Malacca and Zoo Negara, I feel it offers the lowest value for money—just my personal opinion.20241006_023613298_iOS.jpg 20241006_013448283_iOS.jpg

the Bali Cattle (Zon 2) and Malayan Porcupine (Zon 4) enclosures, as well as most of Zon 3 are closed due to construction works

most of the animals in the affected areas have been transferred to other cages
