Taipei Zoo Taipei zoo news

Taipei will transfer 2 (1.1.0) pangolins to Leipzig Zoo (Germany). Schönbrunn Zoo (Austria) will receive pangolins from Taipei in the future. Seven EAZA facilities have shown the willingness to add pangolins to their collection plans.

Zoo Vienna will receive pangolins from Taipei, too? Where did you find that? And, which EAZA facilities are also interested in keeping pangolins?

Currently Taipei has:
3.1.0 Lesser Dwarf Lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius)
4.4.0 Bolivian Night Monkeys (Aotus azarae boliviensis)
2.0.0 Pygmy Slow Lorises (Xanthonycticebus pygmaeus).
And, they said their Common Elands seem to be Livingstone Elands (Tragelaphus oryx livingstonii) according to the appearances.

Taipei Zoo is preparing to return to AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums).
I suspect to participate in some ex situ conservation breeding programs. Generally, intensive cooperation across Continents is a good thing. Having said that ... whether applying to AZA to renew membership is a good thing really at this point depends upon the relevant species for which they have indicated their interest in reapplying for membership.

In some cases where inter-regional cooperation is the main reason for becoming a participating zoo member I do have seen examples where the applicant zoo ends up the worse for wear. Cases like the individual species for which they applied for membership are a.o. invariably recommended not to breed due to unknown paternity / origins or only sparingly or there is issues with import / export or bureacracy and vet/health testing requirements and quarantaine.

Overall, I do think it is a good thing.

BTW: Application to AZA by Taipeh Zoo does not affect their EAZA membership at all. Taipeh Zoo like Singapore participates in a good to fair number of EEP's already and the number has been expanding over time.

Thanks for your positive feedbacks. As I know, currently Taipei is negotiating Malayan tigers (with France and Singapore), pygmy hippo(s) (with Singapore), and Malayan tapir(s) (I guess it is Japan). And, the director and staffs of Taipei will visit Houston Zoo in March to negotiate further collaborations.

The ticket price will be increased to NT$100 since April 2024 (it's NT$60 now).

Pangolins should be transfered to Europe in the latter half of 2024 if everything goes smoothly. Also, they will transfer a Chinese red panda to Japan, as they already got a new male from there. Then, they are still negotiating pygmy hippo and Malayan tigers.

Any idea where the pangolins might be going?

Edit: Sorry, I see Vienna is suggested above.

Personally I think Leipzig will get a new breeding pair faster than Vienna, as Leipzig has had 2 pangolins there.
